This article is internally inconsistent and misleading. It first states that "UVa, unlike other state schools, uses $0 in school funds to support the athletics program" and then goes on to point out that the UVa athletics program collected $13 million in student athletic fees. Tuition and fee monies (including the athletics fee required of all undergraduate students" ARE indeed "school funds" and "school funds" are thus subsidizing the athletic program at UVa, at a time where students and their parents are burdened by high and continually rising tuition and fee costs and the academic programs are being starved for funding.

Misleading at best.

Ed didn't learn much from his journalism degree. This article is completely wrong and backwards.
UVA uses WAY more school money than VT does for athletics. 16% of UVA's athletics budget comes from mandatory student fees charged to students as part of their tuition bill. At VT, only 11% of the budget.
Students have to pay those fees to attend the school. They pay the fee whether they attend games or not. So it is tuition (even if you call it an athletics fee).
