The Republican Party's Race Dillemma
Words from Congressman Raul Labrador sum it up:He told the Wall Street Journal that his party's immigration rhetoric is a turn-off for many Latino voters who might otherwise be inclined to vote Republican on social and fiscal issues. "They don't feel welcome in the party, and I think that's a shame," he said. "I think we can change this." Labrador said that if the party wants to remain relevant, it needs to welcome people of different backgrounds. "I think it's happening nationally," he said. "We need to continue to have this conversation." Labrador is right. Organizations that choose not to change and grow, become extinct. The GOP needs to to embrace America's changing demographics -- an ultimate inevitability -- the "Browning of America." If not, we'll soon be looking at today's Republicans only as artifacts in museums during history lessons.

The wealthy, more corporate, Republican elite views change and diversity in a VERY different way than do the Republican party's blue-collar "grass roots." Much of the grass roots of the GOP - dudes who drive pick-up trucks and have cans of Copenhagen or Skoal in their Levi's - just want hard-working, Spanish-speaking, brownish-complexioned folks to get the hell out of Alabama and stay out. The boom in that population throughout the South is not the kind of "change" and diversity that appeals to the GOP's grass roots. lol
Good write-up about this conflict in the Washington Post:
Having staked its modern character on nativist, pro-white, anti-minority sentiment, the GOP is now HOPELESSLY divided. I look forward to seeing them lose the White House again in 2012.
