Sounds like a great program -- didn't know anything about it as I live in Fluvanna. Hope they'll publicize the next upcoming class come Fall. Great work Sheriff Washington and Fluvanna citizens.

I'm curious what they will do exactly? Some of those folks looked on the senior side of the age range.

They are allowed to engage in pursuits in their Hoverounds only for suspected elderly felons: larceny of Geritol, gumming in public, theft of Polident, involetc. They also are authorized to do pat-down searches of Depends and Assure undergarments.

It may surprise you to learn that "folks on the senior side" can do plenty of things to help the sheriff's office. People can volunteer for a number of positions that don't require youth. And in fact, retired people likely have the time to do it. Or do you think that older people just sit around playing bingo?
