Myths And Facts About Illegal Worker Health Costs

There are 51 comments on the themoderatevoice.com story from Aug 14, 2009, titled Myths And Facts About Illegal Worker Health Costs. In it, themoderatevoice.com reports that:

For many illegal immigrants, the fear of deportation outweighs the pain of illness or injury, so they live with their afflictions rather than seeking help until their health problems become critical. That makes things worse ó for them, for hospitals that eventually treat them, and for taxpayers who ultimately foot the bill.

When did having a baby become an "emergency" anyway?
When they are dragged under the border fence still attached to the umbilical cord.

Hogwash. Hospitals know that there is nothing to collect from illegals and that they would end up losing even more monies hiring collection agencies to chase ghosts. You're living in a fantasy world if you think any big business is going to spend time hiring a collection agency to collect a debt owed by any illegal.
I'm not trying to be right. I just informed you of the standard procedure that any business would perform to collect a debt.

The combined payments of Medicare and Medicaid,$602 billion in 2004, or roughly 44% of all medical expenditures in the U.S.
Emergency room hospitals who lose out on non-payment of any individual already receives a nice chunk of that $602 billion a year in payments. When I say non-payment of an individual I am talking about anyone who falls under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1986 (EMTAMA). Don't assume that everyone who renders service at an emergency room is only an illegal immigrant. How many American citizens don't have health insurance who resort to the emergency room a year? The manipulation of data suggest that only illegal immigrants are bankrupting emergency room hospitals is false. American Citizens use emergency rooms also. To deny this is to deny fact.

It's not. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1986 (EMTAMA) just says the emergency room must accept them.

It's actually an awesome federal mandate. It's just being used to it's fullest potential and hospitals seem to be crying for help now.

<quoted text>I think what they are saying is the doctors have a responsibility to treat these people when in an emergency. The problem is then the doctors pass it off in cost to insurers and they pass it off to us. The true problem is nobody is willing to lose a little so they pass it down to you the consumer. This is capitalism at its finest. Since the far right wingers want capitalism with no intervention or regulation from govt. then we just need to suck it up and pay for these illegals through higher ins. rates.
Actually they are saying that illegal immigrants do go to doctors for non-emergency care because of their fear of being deported. This is a b.s. excuse, I do not know of any family physician that would deport an illegal immigrant since they cannot ask their legal status. When you go to a doctor they ask for your insurance, and if you do not have any, the office will tell you it is cash up front. There is the problem.

The illegal immigrant does not want to pay for health care and would rather use the emergency room in a hospital as a doctor visit. There bye the taxpaying American is the one who is stuck with bill since hospitals pass the out rageous costs of hospitalization on the consumer. Illegal immigrants do not care that someone else is footing the bill, they actually think is free.

This process needs to stop.

I feel for you that you are a professional construction worker who has had to pay the price for the illegal immigrant who has taken away your job. This also needs to stop. By enforcing the immigration laws, raids and deportation which has been effective, the tide will change, and Americans like you will be able once more to do the job you were trained for.

"Actually they are saying that illegal immigrants do go to doctors for non-emergency care because of their fear of being deported."

This line should read as "Actually they are saying that illegal immigrants do NOT go to doctors for non-emergency care because of their fear of being deported."

Data on health care costs for illegal immigrants are sketchy because hospitals and community health centers donít ask about patientsí legal status.

So all the data and "estimated" reports are all based on misinformation? The sad part is America believes it. Why don't America just blame the illegal immigrant for global warming also.
