University of Tennessee opposes guns on campus

Full story: The Pacer

The University of Tennessee, including all of its campuses and institutes statewide, is taking a stand against a proposed bill currently before the state House Judiciary Committee that would allow more people to carry guns on campus, contributing to an unsafe environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Beverly, this time will have to disagree with you about guns on any college campus. Frankly, each student should be required to take a concealed carry class to know how to handle a hand gun and be proficient in the use of one: and carry one. I could all but guarentee you that any sleeze bag would think twice about trying to rob, rape, or other mayhem if he thought everyone on campus was carrying and knew how to dispatch him. There are towns that have done this and the crime rate DRAMATICALLY decreased.
Have you ever watched the show C*O*P*S? When clerks who are being attacked begin to fight fire with fire, those cowardly perps get to running as fast as they can to LEAVE THE BUILDING.
Those who have had training are not "gun crazy". They are intelligent people who are level headed and would use that weapon only as a last resort. You see, that bullet has that person's name on it. Once it leaves the gun, it finds it's mark...same as words..one cannot recall it.
Having gun training and carrying is just the opposite of the excerpt from which I quote: "contributing to an unsafe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors."
Just know that one must be prepared. Gun safety, knowledge, and proper usage is very contributing to the safety of all of the above-mentioned.

AMEN. The Constitution is clear that the "right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed"

Thus the state can not stop you and gun registration requirements are UNCONSTITUTIONAL since they 'infringe' on those rights.

I'm all for people being able to arm themselves for protection. But I have to say just because you have a gun doesn't mean you'll get a chance to use it if you're robbed, raped, or mugged, especially if they happen at gun point. As for that show COPS, what about the episodes they don't show where the clerk pulls a gun on the robbers and gets killed, and believe me, it happens more times than not. Students don't need to carry guns to French class, English class, Chemistry class, or gym class. What's next?? Shoot out in the parking lot over a parking space?? Or why not a shoot out at a frat house with a bunch of drunk jackasses?? There is a time and a place for carrying a legal weapon, but to college classes isn't one of them.

If teachers in elementary schools were armed the nuts wouldn't dare go in and start shooting! The nuts know that schools are defenseless! If citizens were allowed their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT to carry guns on planes there would be zero hijackings! Had just ONE passenger on each of those planes on 9-11 been armed the WTC buildings would still be standing.

i think that the only nut we are talking about is you. kids are a curious lot and too many times kids have been killed or wounded from loaded weapons. listen here rambo that statement is highly disturbing to say the least and if you hang on to those sick ideas about your constitunal rights to pack a weapon wherever you feel like it.what do you know about 9-11.if you were a teacher in a school carrying a weapon around my kid you wouldnt be teaching my kid. now the reason that airlines dont allow passengers to carry weaponson board is to keep psychos like you from shooting up planes. get serious just what the hell is wrong with you.

For those of you making extreme calls of rambo, nuts, etc. you are not speaking to people who have been trained in the proper, sane, and safe handling of firearms.
Those people are responsible for their firearms as they are in their driving vehicles---which can be as deadly an instrument as a gun, by the way, in the hands of someone who is a road raging rambo.
Also, those who are trained will use every other measure to NOT use the fire arm.
It is those who are illiterate in the use of guns who are dangerous-to themselves, to the freedom we hold in our 2nd Amendment, to protect ourselves in an ever-increasing crime-bleeding-heart community, and to every person that is a potential target for some gang member making his bones, or some meth nut, or whatever.
The more oppressive and liberal this government becomes, the more important we must hold to our Constitutional right. Gun ownership is one of those.

the problem about people who holler about second amendment rights is that they want to infringe on peoples rights not to carry weapons. some treat people with comtempt thinking that if you dont have a weapon your unamerican.the second amendment however does not say you can own a m-16 or ak-47 because those weapons didnt exist in 1787. i believe that if you own those thingsyou oughta have a permit. i am for hunters rights yes but there has to be some regulation to make it as difficult for the jared lounghers[the tuscon gunman] to get hold of weapons

the Constitution clearly reads "The right of the PEOPLE to bear arms shall not be infringed"; I don't care how some activist judge tries to reword it!

tell me rambo if you were a teacher in a school and a child got hold of your weapon and shot themselves or someone else would you be talking about gun rights to the greiving parents. gun rights end where the risk of getting someone killed or wounded is high. your talk about packing it in schools tells me you are irresponisble and unable use common sense. people hide behind that phrase the right to bear arms shall not be infringed. im not a judge so let me tell how i see. weapons should not be allowed in schools particuraly with young children. should not be allowed in bars because drunks are not the best judges of their character. and certainly not be allowed in goverement buildings. using the constitution as a license to carry weapons is just plain stupid and seriously you need to think about it.

Exactly. If they're so GUNg-ho for carrying guns everywhere, they need to move to that town in GA where it's a city ordinance to have a gun, unless you're a convicted felon. Let's face it, the convicted felons have guns too. Not everyone should be allowed to carry a gun, Constitutional rights or not.

A responsible gun owner, of which I speak in this thread will not be walking around with a BAR.
Nor will this responsible gun owner keep the hand gun available to a child to "accidentally" get hold of it and kill/maim themselves or others.
This is not some "gung-ho, away we go", "shoot-em-up" wild west vengence, vigilante justice.
This is intelligent use of protection available.

Those of you who are so loudly verbal against guns and rabidly afraid of same, I ask, do you happen to carry pocket knives? Do you drive a vehicle? Do you ever do prep work in the kitchen with butcher knives? Do you ever use pesticides or bleach or other caustic chemicals? Do you ever paint? Do you ever light propane gas grills or fireplaces? If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, then you have the potential of being one who has the power of life and death over another person...no more than one who carries a gun that has been trained in the use of one.

That's a real desperate stretch to justify carrying a gun but it really doesn't work....FAIL !

And you might just have one of the PEOPLE you talk about use their GUN on YOU !! A society with everyone packing a piece does not make it safer. If that was true, the old west would have been a great place to be.

Tell me Mr, "Head in the sand"; if your child was in a classroom and a nut rushed in and started shooting, would you be mad if the teacher pulled out a concealed weapon and killed the nut before they killed your child and a dozen other kids? ONE ARMED TEACHER at Coluumbine High School would have saved a lot of lives.

here we go again my right to play dirty harry trumps common sense. columbine was two students with enough guns and ammo for an army. it happened so fast nobody could have stopped them.its people like you that to settle an argument it got to be with a weapon.you never even answered what would you do when a child gets killed fooling with a weapon you bring to school .would you be hollering rights then to the police the parents. i bet you would. your just a cold heartless person who has a limited range of thought cant see the danger you pose. use your head.
