Gas prices: Unhappy public not sure who to blame

There are 26 comments on the www.indystar.com story from Mar 22, 2012, titled Gas prices: Unhappy public not sure who to blame. In it, www.indystar.com reports that:

Families canceling vacations. Fishermen watching their profits burn up along with their boats' gasoline. Drivers buying only a few gallons of gas at a time because they can't afford to fill the tank.

From all corners of the country, Americans are irritated these days by record-high fuel prices that have soared above $4 a gallon in some states and could top $5 by summer. And the cost is becoming a political issue just as the presidential campaign kicks into high gear.

People do not know who to blame? This shows the ignorance of the people.

Where to begin here. There are several people and several factors that come into play.

1. The Federal Reserve. The Fed controls the quantity of dollars that is in circulation. When they pump more fake money into the system, it causes inflation and makes prices increase. Their inflation numbers are a lie. They no longer include the price of fuel and food into the inflation numbers. So they are cooking the books.

2. Wall Street. The Wall Street speculators in the derivative markets can speculate and use high frequency trading to dictate the cost of oil and fuel in order to give themselves a higher rate of return.

3. The government. The US Government exports 70% of refined oil (gas) to foreign nations. This is simple supply and demand here. Since majority of the fuel is exported to foreign countries, there is less supply in the US, thus causing gas prices to go up.

You said it.

And, people forget that ther oil really belongs to the American people.

The mineral wealth underground belongs to us all. Our government gives licenses to mine, or drill, or extract it. Those who pull it from the ground then own it, and the theory is that we will all be better off for the wealth they dig out. That is, a rising tide lifts all ships.

That our mineral wealth is exported for the profit of a few is a perversion of our economic system unseen and unknowable y the founding fathers. It is unimaginable to fill a three-master with oil and sail to Japan with it.

That is why we should have Federal royalies on minerals mined and drilled; and also an EXPORT TARIFF on petroleum productd, raw and processed.

I agree that there should be an EXPORT TARIFF on petroleum products!!!

"The U.S. exported more oil-based fuels than it imported in the first nine months of this year (2011), making it likely that 2011 will be the first time since 1949 that the nation is a net exporter of such goods."

Why should our natural resources be shipped OUT of the country for a handful of people to profit, while the rest of us are feeling the pain at the pump (and pain trickling through the ENTIRE economy)

Slap a tarrif on US oil EXPORTS and keep the prices DOWN to an affordable level, here in our country.

Oil everywhere. Domestic surpluses up the wazoo. Yet price to consumer keeps increasing.

Support increased drilling and production only when it translates to DECREASED prices for consumer and not just increased profits for oil companies.

If a pipeline is permitted from Canada it damn well better mean lower prices for consumers, or it is not worth doing. Our natural resources must benefit the public as a whole with lower prices, and not just the oil companies interest with higher profits.

Blame the World Market (notice I didn't say 'free market). Yes the US government, along with the US consumer and producer has a big effect but the market for petroleum products is worldwide and all players have an influence.

If you want a cheap and constant price on petroleum based products convince your government to institue price controls along the lines that Richard Nixon set wage and price controls in the 1970s. Be careful what you ask for though ... business will go were the return on investment is highest. Production and refineing need not be in the USA to maximize profit. If the profit is higher somewhere else, well just look at the shoe and textile industry ...

A nice idea; but Nixon's "wage and Price freeze" turned out to be just a wage freeze.

REMEMBER: Exemptions were granted to many prices, but no wages.

I love your Reader's Digest condensed version/explanation of Fox's non-comdemnation of Bush's gas prices. You seem to have left out a pee pot load of details tho. Such as the fact that Bush's gas price highs didn't last this long. Nor were they caused by HIS anti-fossil fuel policies. Obama has had PLENTY of opportunities to turn this mess around and has pizzed them away in his attempts to turn the country into HIS idea of a European model.

Everyone KNOWS speculation is the driver of the record high prices. What YOU fail to admit is the role Obama's anti-oil policies has done to aggravate the situation. I'm sure YOU and other libs had NO problem blaming Bush for HIS high gas prices, hich lasted what?,six-eight months before cominhg back down? Gas prices under the current President have only gone UP for the past three years. Can't blame the oil companies or speculation for ALL of it. At some point energy policies and the Administrations hostility to fossil fuels has to bear the blame.

There are more oil wells in the USA now then ever. Obama has not been anti-oil....That is just alie and nothing he has done or not done would make gas any cheaper then now.....Our government has been for decades keeping our gas prices down...Now they are just gonna go up to meet rest of the world. Again nothing Obama can do outaside of banning speculationa dn capping gas prices WHICH IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL.....will lower prices...We have TONs of supply demand is down....SPECULATION AND OIL COMPANY GREED IS DRIVING PRICES---FACT FACT FACT FACT FACT!!!!!

Hmmmmmm..... I seem to remember when gas prices under Bush hit $4.00/gal the mouth foaming liberals screeched to high heaven it was ALL bush's fault. OBAMA had no problem blaming Bush for the high prices when he was on the campaign trail. The liberal media placed blame directly in Bush's lap. NOW you mouth faoming liberal bastids want to blame it all on speculation and greedy oil companies? Sorry Charlie. Won't wash. A BIG chunk of the blame is Obama's and all the liberal spin in the world won't make it less.

Drilling on PRIVATE lands is UP UP UP. Drilling of FEDERAL lands is DOWN DOWN DOWN. Obama wants the credit for the increased level of private oil production without the blame for HIS administration's denial/delay of drilling permits on federal lands. FACT FACT FACT FACT FACT

Did you see how fast you got slapped with a nuts and clueless icon? Obviously someone doesn't want the price of oil to come down OR the American people to benefit from their OWN oil.

Years ago they told us we were running out of oil. Prices went up.

Then they told us environmentalists created problems for drilling and refining.
Prices went up.

Then they told us terrorism caused production problems.
Prices went up.

Then they told us we either used too much or too little oil
Prices went up.

Now it seems no one even has an excuse anymore or the need for one.

Prices just go up.
