In 2007, the University of Chicago Hospital hired ASK to assist in marketing a plan for steering patients who don't have health insurance to other health care facilities, a plan with which now-First Lady Michelle Obama was associated, working for the hospital. Critics argue that the plan dumps costly patients simply to increase the hospital's bottom line.[30][31]
In 2008, when appointed presidential adviser, Axelrod divested of his equity interest in ASK.

Axelrod and Barack Obama's ties reach back more than a decade. Axelrod met Obama in 1992 when Obama so impressed Betty Lu Saltzmann, a woman from Chicago's "lakefront liberal crowd," during a black voter registration drive he ran that she then introduced the two. Obama also consulted Axelrod before he delivered his famed 2002 anti-war speech[14] and asked him to read drafts of his book, The Audacity of Hope.[15]
“It’s an honor. It’s nothing anyone expected. It’s certainly nothing the president sought. I think that he’s less interested in individual honors, and this certainly is one, than in advancing the causes that were cited by the Nobel committee,” Axelrod said on MSNBC.

he White House found out about the award at about 5 a.m., via a wire report out of the Situation Room, aides said. Press secretary Robert Gibbs called the White House a little before 6 a.m. and woke Obama to tell him he had won.

Gibbs said that Obama was "humbled" to get the honor and senior adviser David Axelrod expressed surprise that the award went to Obama.

“It’s an honor. It’s nothing anyone expected. It’s certainly nothing the president sought. I think that he’s less interested in individual honors, and this certainly is one, than in advancing the causes that were cited by the Nobel committee,” Axelrod said on MSNBC.
