The black colleges REALLY need to curb their requests. Most of those schools only have like 1-5k students, if that. They wanted more money than USM, MSU, or Ole Miss, all of which have like 15-20k students or more.

Given Barbour wanted to merge those colleges with Jackson State they'd better be careful. Given the attitude most of the Republicans have they'd be inclined to CUT allocations -- NOT increase them.

Its pretty outrageous though that they have to have such expensive facilities. I know they're 'shooting for the stars' & probably know that if they get any more it'll be less but they're not helping their cause when so many ppl are out of work or @ best have temp jobs or part time work. And most of us are struggling with taxes that with proportion to the median income -- are REALLY high. Sure Mississippi has 'low taxes' in comparison to say New York or California -- but the median income is also much lower & in proportion to our incomes taxes here are almost as high as in 'high tax' states.

Big fish like Ingalls & the casinos are the only ones who benefit from the 'high taxes.'

But the black colleges had better get used to trimming their waste lines, or the legislature is going to strangle them & merge them with Jackson State.

Because really other than for legacy reasons there really is no reason why they should exist. They're WAY the hell out in the middle of nowhere & generally have falling or flat enrollment, & tiny enrollment numbers @ that. And they're demanding a disproportionate amt. of funds given their student enrollment size. Considering most want more than USM & MSU -- the 2 biggest schools in the state. They really aren't earning what they're requesting. And if they ask for too much -- they'll be viewed as greedy gold-diggers looking for easy money on the public dime.

why does MS need separate black colleges?

Well Mississippi has evolved into a bizarre ironic state. The separate colleges are actually a product of Jim Crow -- those schools are where the blacks went to college back in the day. After integration for whatever reason the state legislature never closed them down. Like the Mississippi Delta itself, they've suffered from drops in enrollment & money as the state has cut its budget by near 50% since 2006.

Many blacks go to the regular schools in the state but the black legislature leaders & the state NAACP now view the schools as a matter of ethnic/racial pride to have the schools even though they're not really needed. It provides 3 un-needed schools with extra expensive bureaucracy. There's a large black school in Jackson(Jackson State Uni.) that easily could make these smaller black schools 'satellite' type campuses. The last governor, Barbour, who was an idiot overall but on this issue was dead right tried to combine various colleges to save a lot of money. It was a good idea that got vetoed because of racial pride issues & lawsuits by black groups.

In this case in the middle of this recession they want an insane amt. of money to upgrade their failing schools in the stupid attempt to 'upgrade' hoping it'll make the schools 'more attractive' & that that alone will somehow magically increase enrollment.

This state will be majority black in another 10 or 20 years if current population numbers keep up. If you look @ most of the black counties/cities/schools in the state & how they're ALWAYS chronically underfunded, there's massive corruption where the black politicians @ the top of the pyramid give themselves & their close friends/family all the lucrative jobs & hike their pay until they bankrupt the municipality or school district & then the state comes in & tries to take it over. The black kids 9 times out of 10 if they even care about learning @ best attain vo-tech/blue collar levels of education. They constantly demand or ask for more money both for higher ed & for public schools & yet the results continue to flatline & average out as they don't perform. The reasons/excuses given are as numerous as grains of sand on the beach, a racist grading system, white flight(whites taking their money & hauling ass), not enough funding, tests that don't appeal to black culture, etc. Ask 5 different black sociologists & you'll get 5 unique answers. Who knows, who cares. All that matters are results & they're not 'putting out' in terms of grades or graduation numbers.

They're not bad ppl, many are the most polite, well-mannered ppl you'll ever meet & good Christian ppl too. But they can't balance a checkbook or a budget to save their life & they overspend like crazy on mundane crap that bankrupts them -- & then they always need another bailout after they fail @ auditing their budget issues.

They always want or demand more money than they reasonably can justify in terms of school funding. Which is why they're asking for FAR more per capita than MUCH bigger colleges. It makes no sense & its not about logic with these ppl its about legacy & emotion.

I do truly fear for when they take over the state legislature & the education establishment. They don't understand the muni bond market & their propensity to ignore accounting rules/budget requirements will destroy them.

The Coast down here pays 40% of the state budget already. When they take over the state govt I strongly suspect they'll double our tax rates to pay for their crap, which will cause a tax revolt I would imagine.

We're already over-indebted down here & we've been propping up the rural areas of the state for decades. Time for that to come to an end. The good old boys who run everything now will be dead or will have the brains to leave the state once the blacks take over. I'm trying to leave now, this state will be a basketcase by the time that happens, hell its a basketcase now....
