This should come as no surprise to anyone who knows the very conservative doctrines of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS). The best examples of their doctrine are that they absolutely will NOT ordain women as pastors, holding them to be second-class humans to superior males; and are rigidly "pro-life."
Given this doctrine and others equally conservative, it is no wonder that relations with the Chapel and the LCMS Board have been "contentious." Given this chapel is an island of 19th-century conservatism in an ocean of 50,000 students, it is surprising that the congregation is as large as it is -- 125.
There are plenty of other LCMS churches in the metro area where those who embrace those doctrines can worship in the fellowship of their peers.
It is time to allow that 1-acre tract to serve a larger percentage of the University's student body.
