Uk Asks To Extend Smoking Ban To City Sidewalks

The Urban City Council in Lexington is being asked to close a four-foot loophole in the University of Kentucky's new no-smoking policy the city sidewalks on campus.

Of course. It is pathetic--but typical and predictable--that smokers would opt to thwart the clear spirit of the law on such a premise.

A student at another educational institution, bound to a wheelchair, told me she regularly ended her day with cigarette burns either on her arms or in her clothing because of smokers "sharing" the sidewalks on campus.

She rolled along at a level below the smokers' line of sight--even when they weren't squinting against the sidestream smoke so close to their faces--and they just carelessly dropped their arms after taking a drag. The lit cigarettes frequently hit her or her chair, causing a significant number of glowing embers to fall off on her.

This is, of course, in addition to making it impossible for the students to avoid the chemical hazard.

The headline for this is a bit sensationalist, and serves as anti-regulationist propaganda. It implies something far more extensive than what is actually involved in the request. Adding "on campus" or simply referring to them as "campus sidewalks" would have been truer to the facts.
