I see the benefits of keeping my child out of school for one more year–if she is too young emotionally and physically, there is a benefit no matter what.

It really depends on the child. I've observed kids who are ready and those who are not. Parents should be in tune with their kids to see where they fit in and at what point will be best for them to enter kindergarten.

What kind of an idiot would hold their kid back from starting school for a year just so the kid could dominate when he's a year older. It's akin to that 14-year-old pitcher in Little League pitching against 12 year-olds.

I had a late summer birthday and started school as one of the youngest in my class - I always felt fine about it - but I think it was different for the younger boys.

I agree with Ellen that it depends on the child. Parents should check with the pre-school teacher to find out how the child fares in their class. If they can sit and listen without contant interuption and follow simple rules they are probably ready.

My parents held my brother back from kindergarten for a year because they were concerned about his emotional readiness. Given that he graduated from high school as class valedictorian, I'd say they made the right decision in his case. I think it's all a very personal decision.

i don't think kids should be held back if they have late summer birthdays.
