Campus Life 101: Staying Sober
As a high school senior, Aaron Weir decided to attend Texas Tech University in Lubbock, not for any particular academic program but for the hospitality that school extends toward students in recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction.

Good for him for getting sober at 16.
I can totally relate to this story, myself being a young person in recovery. Although I'm 24.

Fortunate enough to get this deal at a young age. Being young and in recovery is not only possible, but well worth it.

You stay sober on campus because you are now a young adult responsible for YOUR actions. You are not at college to party. Being at college on campus is not a license to party. It is not a right of passage. If you want to work in a drug free work place or work at a company that does not want previous drug users you stay away from drugs. If you want to run for political office you stay away from drugs. If you want a job in law enforcement you stay away from drugs. If you money in your pocket you do not do drugs.
But most importantly young college students are young ADULTS responsible for their actions. No juvenile hall once you are 18. Should add wether a teeny bop young adult or ancient senior citizen you are not supposed to be doing ILLEGAL drugs. You are NOT supposed to abuse drugs. There IS no excuse.

I was shocked by how many drugs I saw at my university. For me being away from my home city and meeting new people meant I hardly thought about drugs my first 2 years- this year I finished with 84% average. I still felt the isolation from the students I lived in residence with as they learned more about my past and would sometimes use "but you went to rehab!" as an insult (seemingly as a joke)
this place seems like an awesome place to go to school. I hope it is opening the eyes of people who see drug addicts and even EX-drug addicts as incompetent at succeeding or a burden on society. and giving hope to parents who thought they may never see their son or daughter get out of addiction and live a happy, rewarding life.
