After 10 years, RiverCenter for the Performing Arts still keeping downtown Columbus' momentum alive

Sep 8, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Ledger-Enquirer.com

After the decision was made by city and community leaders to build the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, Frank Brown recalls Columbus businessman and philanthropist Bill Turner saying the project needed to be more than bricks and mortar and glass that people visited only on performance nights.

The Rivercenter is the engine that drives local entertainment. When I see a local act from our *music scene* perform there to a full house I will rethink my observations posted elsewhere.

That would be great to see that happen.

The last time I know of any of the local music scene performing there was when a group of us put together a Christmas show with various holiday classics done with our difeerent styles and perspectives. I particularly enjoyed doing the lead vocal on "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"... hopefully we can regroup some of the local musicians again this year for this, where we did shows at the RiverCenter, a couple of the local old folks' homes, Idle Hour Park and so on.

Great times, great friends, and great memories.

Indeed, even moreso to those of us who remember when that block was the site of the Police Department and the crumbling remains of the Skateland skating rink.

Well, again, sorry you're entrenched with such a negative and narrow minded opinion of our hard working and talented local singers, songwriters and musicians, Lorri, but at least your lack of support is balanced by those who do see value in our local Columbus-Phenix City music scene... as my converation with Rusty Wood, programming director at Phenix Coty Cable-TV expounded on, earlier today, elsewhere:
Rusty wrote:
With over 600 videos and countless hours, I seriously doubt that anyone here took too much time to check it out. If you did, you would find much talent.
Correct, Rusty, and as Rusty wrote me earlier today on this silly "Yes" vs. "No" poll:

Rusty Wood: The "votes" on this doesn't effect the local music scene one way or the other.

Will Dockery: True, Rusty Wood... even if 1000 people vote No to the 500 voting yes, and that number stayed the same, the Local Music scene would not roll over and die... it survived the lean times of the 1970s and 1980s when there wasn't anyone or way to even cast a vote. "Wig Shops & Prosititutes" sounds like a good album title, like Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen, "Night Hawks At The Diner".

I agree, as will be discussed soon, the flourishing of talent and the support of even 500 local music fans can only be a win-win scenario... we all remember our current "music row" on Broadway back in the 1980s when those blocks, besides Robert E Lee Bar and Pillow Talk Lounge was nothing but wig shops and prostitutes... hold up, I miss thoses days. Just kidding but I know ya'll catch my drift. And thanks for the kudos, means a lot coming from an artist of your stature (to me, anyhow). Gotta run... the media awaits...heh.

And for those unfamilar with the music scene in Columbus-Phenix City then and now, the scene is also thriving with talent of every variety:

These videos can be viewed by Phenix City residents on East Alabama Cable-TV channel 7.

Only in Columbus could this beautiful facility and the genuine artists that perform there be relegated to equal status with some schmuck strumming a guitar on broadway

Two inaccuracies with your post:

1)Not all guitarists who strum their guitars on Broad are schmucks

2)I am sure the majority of people do not find the RiverCenter and any music played on Broad to be of equal status or even caliber.

Well celebration and appreciation of your local talent should be a given... kind of makes one wonder what agenda would lead one to do otherwise.

So it goes.
