I'd almost rather kill myself than clean a litter box, that's why my cat is trained to go outside for the bathroom. Of course city dweller have it to "doo". My sympathy for them.

"The Atlantic" magazine had an article on toxo awhile back. Perhaps it's online.

Often with suicides you will hear casual acquaintances opine the victim appeared to be feline perfectly fine.

Overall, pet owners including cat owners tend to live longer than those without pets. That still doesn't stop some from making nonsensical alarmist claims about cat ownership.

Makes one wonder who thinks these studies up. BRAIN FLASH!>>"Maybe Aunt Ruthie died because the cat has a litter box."... Why would such an idea take root?

Hum,... I think I got a flat tire because a white line is painted on the hi-way. Give me a chart pad, I'm gathering data!![and don't think I won't sue the road company when the numbers come up proving people who drive on painted hi-ways get flat tires!]

In general it is the parasite which actually infects rats & mice as an intermediate host. In order to get into the cat it makes the rodents lost their fear of cat scent, and may drive an infected rodent to seek out a cat for company/rumpy pumpy etc.

After the cat has eaten the suicidal rodent it then creates the crap. This crap with toxpolasma cysts in it then gets back into the rodents whom nibble their way through dried remnants for minerals etc (a lot of bone bits in cat poo).

The effects on humans varies according to the human; in general those subject to Toxoplasma are generally disuptive idiots glorying in risk taking and playing the monkey.

some toxoplasma victims however develop the classical symptoms seen in rodents and accumulate kitties as houseguests in the dozens.

that do ya?

toxo pasmosis is said to increase one's chance of committing suicide. Owning a pet (including cats) is supposedly connected to a slightly longer lifespan and better emotional and physical health. It would seem that the risk for T. gondii and the benefits of pet ownership would cancel each other out. I have no plans to get rid of my cats.

good on ya

Nothing really wrong with kitties.

Also note Toxopolasmosis is also a risk with the intermediate hosts (rodents) and also farm animals etc, a link with sheep & toxoplasmosis has also been documented (apparently Toxoplasma aims at a different kitty in that case).
At particular risk are operatives in the meat industry, farmers, ranchers and in particular, the lost & the dammned in the meat rendering sector (more yuk, with toxo as part of the list of hangers on).

Also note that Human reaction to toxplasmosis is variable, ranging from intermediate host (as described in the panel) through to climax host (as occurs in the cat) and varies according to the person.

Results in climax host are exactly the same as with kitty; (case of bad guts, and probable tuna breath as an add on). Most humans in the situation will tend toward a vegetarian diet at that point in order to clear the excess hangers on (panda option), with humans that is one of the handy things about being an omnivore, and a diet switch will kick out the toxo which cannot go back a stage!

With toxo therefore remember that the problem is not just limited to the cat, which is instead one of the species which acts as the climax host.

Music soundtrack list...

a;Monty python: "spam" song

b;Turbonegro: "You give me worms" ( a fun one to listen to when looking this one over)

c;(an unremembered Motown band but obvious): "you keep me hanging on"

add a few more as you find em.

Have a nice day: Ag
