"Obama: A disaster for civil liberties"

Thursday, September 29, 2011

I could not agree more either with the Los Angeles Times op-ed, quoted above, or with the scathing piece by legal eagle Jonathan Turley that runs underneath:

Obama failed to close Guantanamo Bay as promised. He continued warrantless surveillance and military tribunals that denied defendants basic rights. He asserted the right to kill U.S. citizens he views as terrorists. His administration has fought to block dozens of public-interest lawsuits challenging privacy violations and presidential abuses.

But perhaps the biggest blow to civil liberties is what he has done to the movement itself. It has quieted to a whisper, muted by the power of Obama's personality and his symbolic importance as the first black president as well as the liberal who replaced Bush. Indeed, only a few days after he took office, the Nobel committee awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize without his having a single accomplishment to his credit beyond being elected. Many Democrats were, and remain, enraptured.

It's almost a classic case of the Stockholm syndrome, in which a hostage bonds with his captor despite the obvious threat to his existence. Even though many Democrats admit in private that they are shocked by Obama's position on civil liberties, they are incapable of opposing him.

It looks more like a cult of personality. Obama's policies have become secondary to his persona.

Correct.......

Liberals hated Bush and even sided with some right wing groups on states rights when Bush was raiding medical marijuana clinics.....

But they love it when oslama raids more of them in one year than Bush did in 8 years......

They hated drones under Bush but love them under oslama.....

They hated wars under Bush but now love them under oslama....

Sheeples..........

4 million per day is a lot of money I will agree.........

But it is a punishment for what they did.......

Are you saying it is ok for the government to imprison a innocent person for no reason???

Do you understand the bill of rights???

So 5 days is not big deal how about 10 days???
How about 10 years???

What if he had died???

Ya need to move to Iran if you think this is ok behavior........

Why Iran?

Cuba is much closer and Obama is still using Gitmo for this purpose.

You might want to read 42 U.S.C.§ 1983.

Holder is investigating per Barbra Boxer's request. If Holder brings charges against the cops who did it, laughing lamebraing is going to have to reverse his position and start smearing the victem.

I can't understand how it could happen, really based on this:

"Chong has said he was eventually forced to drink his own urine to survive after being detained and locked in the five-by-10-foot windowless cell after a drug raid on April 21.

He was discovered April 25 and rushed to the hospital, where he spent five days being treated for a perforated lung, possible kidney failure and other illnesses."

He's owed at least that much, he could have died all for failure of this bunch. How could they lock anyone up without a record of having done it? Totally inept.

He could have died, did you even read the article? I doubt it or you are just too stupid to understand how life threatening this was. No food, no water and HANDCUFFED the whole time!! In a small windowless room.

Are we sure it was a mistake? Maybe they were teaching him a "lesson" since they had nothing to charge him with.

You wouldn't volunteer for $20,000,000 for the same experience?
