Tyngsboro hikes cost of school lunches

Full story: Lowell Sun

In the town that recently hiked its already high bus and school athletic user fees, Tyngsboro parents likely understand that there's rarely such a thing as a free lunch.

New Super of schools--same old story. Rape and pillage the students pockets. It isn't enough to pay for the cost of food. A kitty will be built up; supposedly, to replace equipment. Bus fees---athletic fees---parking fees---just couldn't resist an increase for FOOD! Maybe,.25C for toilet use is next.

Close the Lakeview School/Daycare---No Way?

I hope the food is better, but for a family of 3 school aged children, to pay over $6/day for crap food is unacceptable!

No more nachos, mortz sticks, and hard pancakes! The old food service was crap. I hope they also put into affect some type of system to make it easier to pay -- especially going from 1.85 to 2.20!!! Thats a 35cent increase!

and who in their right mind will pay $2.10 for the TECC food -- its shipped from TES and agai, CRAP

Soon it will be like the airline commercial where you will need to send your kid with a pocket full of quarters to pay for everything.

Hey I have an idea let's start making our children's lunches the good ole' fashion way. There's nothing wrong with a sandwich and a piece of fruit and it only takes 3 minutes to do in the morning and for some the night before is even easier. A pound of bologna, bread and a bag of mixed fruit such as granny apples, oranges and McIntosh you can get them like this at Market Basket, estimate under $10.00 per week you can feed a couple kids a day and you can buy bottled spring water buy the case for practically nothing at Walmart's. It can be done and you won't have all the stress and aggravating thoughts on how the school system is trying to squeeze every penny out of us.

"I think I've learned that there's no good time to raise a fee," said committee member Hillari Wennerstrom, a mother of two school-age children. "Even in good times, nobody wants to pay it, and it's a double-whammy in bad times. But we're in the business of educating kids, so if we have to pay for other things -- unfortunately, that's the situation we find ourselves in."

News flash for Hillari, public education is not a business. Businesses make money, schools take money.

HMMM lunches are subsidized by the state and federal govt. Are the teachers getting a subsidized lunch? I find it amazing that they increased spending and announced an increase in lunches at the same time.

Now that makes too much sense. Let's just complain and whine and cry in our milk. Poor us...

Costs go up and I try to save money. Gas increase - I try to consolidate trips. Restaurants too expensive - I don't eat out. I don't buy fancy cars because I can't afford it.

The Town citizens do not want to pay for extra services anymore - educate them and move them out. No sports, busses or lunches. You can't have your cake and eat it too people.

The reason people complain is because they put more and more money into something (in this case schools) and they continue to get less and less in return. There has to come a point where this thing is so broke people actually fix the problems instead of throwing some more money and hoping it will take care of itself.

I love it. Reminds me of the recent failed override in Chelmsford. People then complained that if the override passed and everyone agreed to pay $300 more in taxes then they wouldn't be stuck with a $200 bus fee. Seems like the math classes in Chelmsford aren't helping anyone, why fund them.

Isn't there even one of you who thinks the Lakeview School should be closed? It is primarily a Daycare center with public employees that get health care benefits and will qualify for pensions. The cost of utilities is going up. Moth ball the place.

Just got the voice recorded message from Chelmsford finance manager that $200 per student bus fee is due August 1 to reserve your child's seat on the bus. Hope the "no" nitwits that voted "no" on the override and for President busH who cut federal funds to local districts and for Romney (what's in it for me& my career) who cut local aid to cities and towns 1st year in office are happy . They can spend the money on golf fees and senior discount meals now.

let's have the seniors pay FULL price for their "lunches" at the senior center and local restaurants , like everyone else in the good old days.

So we increase the cost of lunches for kids 5-18 years ( who dont have an income), and we discount lunches for seniors 62-90 years ( who get fixed checks and own their homes mortgage free). The seniors don't mind either , could care less, always looking for a handout and abatement, discount, freebies.

What is amazing to me is that you probably graduated from one of our public schools.

Please, moron, answer a few questions for me.
1. What is a fixed check?
2. If a senior doesn't have a mortgage it's because he made monthly payments for 30 years. What is the problem with that?
3. I'm a senior, I don't look for handouts. Please explain why?

I always paid full price and tip 20% to 25%. How often do you take your family out to eat?
