Twenty of the nation's top climate scientists have sent a letter to Gov. Jerry Brown, telling him that his plans supporting increased use of the controversial practice of hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," will increase pollution and run counter to his efforts to cut California's global warming emissions.

Fracking sure sounds like a cure all, but it has been shown to have serious problems. One is the seal on the injection pipe. Sloppy practices often lead to water contamination. Secondly, there is risk of earthquakes from the expansion of the rock. Third is the problem that initial production is encouraging but the production drops off rapidly.

I don't say not to use it but there should be better regulation, a government oversight on the 'injection solution' and perhaps a slower development.

They may have no choice if the farmers start to demand consevation of the water resources. But yes, they are running a short sighted program of shale gas development. They are among 'the first to try', not the 'last to cast the old aside'.

The USSR used Poland as a dumping ground as industry developed, in which the Soviets got all the benefits & Poland got all the pollution. By the time the Soviets lost power, Poland was considered the worst polluted environment on Earth. Environmental losses continue, with lifespans in portions of Poland, reduced by almost 7-8% due to environmental degradation alone.
