IN many states;english is the law.
My state is one.

I also noticed you mentioned other countries speak more than one language...What is the language, other than native, the other countries speak most? ENGLISH,the language of business.

Yes, exactly because English is the language of business (though Spanish is on the rise in this regard, in our hemisphere anyway) it has a resilience that makes governmental legislation unnecessary. The resilience of English comes from its constant contact with other languages: the history of marketplace English in relation to Church Latin and Governmental Norman-French in England in 1100-1600 is very instructive on this point. But my main point is that English only laws are essentially useless: again, your point about folk in other countries speaking English as their main second language (despite, for example, France and Iceland and Finland having laws protecting their "native" tongue) confirms the argument that the legislation of language is merely a "feel-good" measure that does little to change how people actually conduct business and life.

<quoted text> I'm sure the wall and the other measures designed to control the flow of a certain class of people makes you very happy, but history tells us such walls eventually turn into ineffective dinosaurs (Hadrian's Wall; those walls in China). The walls I grew up with in Derry and Belfast were a temporary fix and arre now hampering the peace process. In any event, we are discussing the English only ballot measure in Missouri. My hope is that the good people of Missouri will see that this is an unnecessary, expensive, ineffective effort to control something, language, that will not be controlled by laws. I'm glad you are getting used to saying "adios" because the tide of history is moving us towards a time when it'll be an everyday phrase for all of us. Slan.
Hadrian's wall was on the farthest outskirts of a crumbling empire. It was guarded by Syrian mercenaries that had little incentive to put their lives on the line to keep out the Scots.
Our fence in on our own border. We have EVERY incentive to keep out an invading horde that does not share our language or culture. An alien culture that demands that we assimilate to there traditions while they insist that they will NOT assimilate to our traditions in our own country.
You truly underestimate the resolve of the American people in this matter.
Are you an American citizen or a foreign citizen residing in America? I ask this since you mentioned that you grew up in Derry, North Ireland.
