even in pens with just 7 birds they will eat a weak or wounded bird. They will also eat the eggs if there's a chance.

activists should do their research before they sit on their fencepost and pontificate.

If chickens see one amongst them that is bleeding etc they will attack it. I can only hazard a guess that they believe it can make them sick, or kill them via disease, or some such other reason. It seems to be a culling action. In all raising of chickens there are deaths or misery if you consider,if only, the precipitous end.
It is still more humane to let them flock together. Some farmers who accommodate chickens in pens remove injured birds and isolate them temporarily until their wounds are healed.
