Eliminating this position would save some money and would affect nothing.

The eagle reported that this dude makes about 60K a year to boot. More like $100K when you figure in the benefits. And they let go of the cops instead. lol gotta love this city.

Unfortunately, i belive the city is required by law to have this position. Most likely due to someone not getting the position they wanted in police or fire.

I don't believe it is mandatory to have such a position, but I do recall a judge recommending it as a solution to several "diversity" based lawsuits against the city. It all started when the Pennsylvania Statewide Latino Commission (PSLC) sued the city for their police hiring methods. The claims of discrimination were simply due to the low percent of Latino police officers in a high percent Latino populated city. However, hiring sessions after the lawsuit still showed that many of the minorities still didnít make the grade. And many of those that did had background check issues. It wasnít about race; it was about the lack of knowledge of those who applied. So now they are going to give any applicant that can speak Spanish extra points like they do for ex-military. This is what I know about the police. I donít know about the hiring practices of the Fire. I do know that Iíve never seen a minority firefighter in my time in Reading.
