Bullying a strong risk factor for suicide in gay youth

There are 62 comments on the KAUZ story from Feb 14, 2012, titled Bullying a strong risk factor for suicide in gay youth. In it, KAUZ reports that:

TUESDAY, Feb. 14 -- New research confirms the trend of disturbing headlines that have appeared in media reports in the past two years: As seemingly damning as the headlines may be, the results of the study don't prove that harassment directly causes young gay people to become suicidal or hurt themselves.

Most of us already know this but I'm very pleased that there is research showing the dangers to LGBTQ youth. But then again the religious right will ignore the research the same way they ignore all research supporting the LGBTQ people of the world.

"But mental health professionals and those who work in suicide prevention say bullying-related suicides that reach the spotlight are painted far too simplistically. Bullying and suicide can indeed be connected, though the relationship between the two is much more complicated than a tabloid headline might suggest. To imply clear-cut lines of cause and effect, many experts maintain, is misleading and potentially damaging as it ignores key underlying mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety."

Try as you will, the blood on your hands isn't going to wash off that easily. Your hatred (you know that thing you call for some strange reason, "God's love") kills and you know it, you just don't care other than we know it too.

A far larger number of straight kids are committing suicide than the gay ones.

Hey DIVORCED marriage and buybull expert, you're too stupid (and pleased with homophobia) to grasp what "strong risk factor" means.

I guess before all this is over and done we will have to demonstrate the concept by bullying little talibangelical snots in school to the point of their suicides.

Murder is against the law too, but there are thousands of murders every day. Laws do not stop crimes. You can say they will get arrested and prosecuted,,, well maybe they will and maybe they won't. How many unsolved crimes are out there where the perpetrator has never been caught?

It absolutely does. You seem to think the anti bullying laws will stop bullying and it won't.

Anyone who is honest already knows this. No mentally stable person kills themselves. Kids are bullied because they are fat, skinny, red headed, left handed, etc. Funny how they don't show the red head suicide rate due to bullying. They are simply whining little bitches and believe it is all about them

You are such disgusting, sub human filth.

Red headed kids are not defamed by buybull sickos, their parents, their principals, their "clergy."

Someone can be at some kind of risk which, absent abuse, would not have resulted in suicide.

Lastly, given the epidemic of suicides among armed forces veterans and members your dismissive comments are double foul.

Society really should start systematically bullying you lying, sexually deranged homophobes. Just suing you for discriminating or charging you for your hate crimes is not enough.

"Homophobes" are already bullied. Just read a few posts, even on this page right here. Christians have been bullied for hundreds of years in lots of ways and persecuted. Do they kill themselves? Nope. Other people kill them, but I have never heard of a Christian killing themselves because they were bullied.

Jesus said:

Matthew 5:10-12 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Matthew 5:44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

Nowhere did Jesus say, "Talk ugly about the the person persecuting you and then go kill yourself." Only Satan would tell you to kill yourself. Are gays listening to Satan?

You stinking, deranged filth, we haven't (yet) said you reprobate, sexually disordered talibangelicals can't marry, adopt, serve openly or be protected from arbitrary firing. Nor have we bullied your spawn to the point of their suicides. Nor do we roam the streets in cowardly packs looking to physically assault you freeeks.

You evilgelical bigots better start hoping you don't get treated as you have treated others, because we _know_ who the discriminatory, disgusting bigots have been.

I know no such thing. I know that anyone who wallows in self-pity is in danger of allowing their good sense to fly out the window. I know that no one kills themselves unless there is something seriously wrong with them. You can claim that it is just because they are gay and people aren't falling all over themselves to praise them for it all you want, but in my mind that just says that being gay is the thing that is wrong with them. If you care about gay people killing themselves, you'll stop blaming other people and make it clear to gays that they are the ones responsible. You can't do anything about your sucky life until you accept responsibility for your own feelings and behaviors. That is true for every single person on the planet. What on earth makes you think that gays are some kind of noble exception?

Then just a little bullying should put you right over the edge, filth.

I'd like to see you say that to the family of a service member who came back and committed suicide. I'd even come visit you in the emergency room, you vile pos.

You are ignoring the evidence presented in this article and the previous studies it cites. The anti-gay prejudice you promote contributes to the hopelessness that causes some, especially young, gay people to kill themselves.

"N. Eugene Walls, an assistant professor of social work at the University of Denver, said the study confirms other findings about the effects of anti-gay bullying.

"As more and more research accumulates, those who wish to ignore anti-gay bullying or dismiss it as normal adolescent behavior and teasing are going to have an increasingly difficult argument to make that bullying is not that serious," he said.

What should parents do?

"Research indicates that they are unlikely to be able to change their child's sexual orientation. So even though it may be difficult, sexual orientation is likely to be something about their child that will require acceptance," said Jennifer Langhinrichsen-Rohling, a professor of psychology at the University of South Alabama." If I followed your logic here and had a child with failing grades I should not punish or attempt to correct this issue because it may contribute to his hopelessness. This is just stupid

I agree, Honest Abe. It all falls under the self-esteem umbrella. Every little darling can be just exactly how they want to be no matter how destructive it is because doing anything other than accepting them just as they are might harm their precious and very fragile self-esteem. So all these kids have grown up thinking they are absolutely wonderful despite their numerous failures in many areas of their lives. The Socialists (the great equalizers) have them all right where they want them - ignorant, vainglorious about their own self worth, and hellbent on destructive behaviors. Got news for all who don't believe this. The hopelessness awaits all who are like this no matter what the people around them say or do. There is an answer and solutions, but the Socialists have worked very hard at destroying the sources of all those, too. God help them all.
