The Paradox of College: The Rising Cost of Going to School

There are 7 comments on the www.theatlantic.com story from Apr 20, 2012, titled The Paradox of College: The Rising Cost of Going to School. In it, www.theatlantic.com reports that:

The most important issue in higher education might not be cost control. It might be advertising

Have you heard about the dangerous, rising cost of not going to college? In the last 30 years, the typical college tuition has tripled. But over the exact same period, the earnings gap between college-educated adults and high school graduates has also tripled. In 1979, the wage difference was 75%. In 2003, it was 230%.

Ahh yes, the $100k degrees in complete worthlessness.

So, what are you getting all of this debt for? Liberal Arts? WTF?

Here is a novel idea, join the military and get some application knowledge.

People need to do something about college, I wish the government was not involved at all then colleges would have to bow to market pressures. But since they are involved they need to demand things, things like we are not going to give out federal guarantees to students of your college if you spend all the money of perks and things that have nothing to do with education.

There is no reason that a college can not combine online lectures and self study. With testing and some classroom work done at school without astronomically priced text books, student activity fees, sports fees, healthcare fees and all the other fees they have. They could provide a much cheaper degree to those who are self starters and willing to do the work.

But this will never happen as long as we have this gigantic government teat for them to draw on.

Those who keep touting education education guess what? Those parasites they are in the education buisness. They must keep recruiting students in order to prepetuate their parasitic jobs. Those colledge degrees are as common as tree leaves. A high school diploma back in the 1960,s was worth more than a college degree is today. Those students upon graduation find that their arent any jobs. All they got is a almost worthless scrap of paper and a student loan to repay. Sadly they find that the promised pot of gold at the end of the education rainbow is a myth.

This is so true.

I speak to today's college grads, and they are woefully ignorant. I did know much more coming out of high School than they do out of college.
There are exceptions to this, there are always a few brilliant people, and they learn on their own.

But, a college degree just to manage a chain store is overkill; and far worse jobs than store manager require this useless, expensive paperwork.
