Organizers at NNU are busy planning the 2010 Beloved Community activities that will occur in January for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Sister Helen Prejean, award winning anti-death penalty author and speaker, is the featured speaker for this year’s event.

Sister Prejean’s first book, “Dead Man Walking,” was on the New York Times Bestsellers List for 31 weeks. The book is based on her own experiences as a spiritual advisor to a man sentenced to die in the electric chair. Her book was made into a major motion picture starring Susan Sarandon as Sister Prejean and Sean Penn as the inmate on death row, and was nominated for four Oscars.

Sister Prejean’s second book, “The Death of Innocents,” was published in 2004. In it, Sister Prejean “examines how flaws inextricably entwined in the death penalty system inevitably lead to innocent people being executed and render the system unworkable,” says her website
