53% of Recent College Grads Are Jobless or Underemployed

There are 53 comments on the www.theatlantic.com story from Apr 24, 2012, titled 53% of Recent College Grads Are Jobless or Underemployed. In it, www.theatlantic.com reports that:

A college diploma isn't worth what it used to be. To get hired, grads today need hard skills.

More than half of America's recent college graduates are either unemployed or working in a job that doesn't require a bachelor's degree, the Associated Press reported this weekend. The story would seem to be more evidence that, regardless of your education, the wake of the Great Recession has been a terrible time to be young and hunting for work.

What was it that the Bush administration did to damage the economy?
Was it deficit spending?
Was it encouraging banks to make subprime mortgages?
Was it granting federal loans to students who want to persue a degree in interpretive pelican dancing?
Refusal to regulate.

Well, I do give lessons on religion, which are much appreciated. I teach Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Tantraism, Yoga, and, tho it is not a religion, The Art of War

If they would pursue degrees in studies applicable to todays job market, they just might have better luck. A degree in basket weaving or 18th century French art is a big mistake.

Mello Roll or Mell-O-Roll ("Up your hole with a Mello Roll!")
Mello rolls (also sometimes spelled “mello-rolls” or “mell-o-rolls,” perhaps like “jell-o") were ice cream treats, somewhat like ice cream cones. They were popular in the Bronx and in Brooklyn; many people remember them served at Jones Beach in the 1940s and 1950s.
The television show Welcome Back, Kotter (1975-1979) was based on comedian Gabriel Kaplan’s life, as expressed in his comedy album Holes and Mello-Rolls. One joke line on the tv show—“Up your nose with a rubber hose!”—was originally recalled by Kaplan as “"Up your hole with a mello roll!”
Now go find one and LICK yer Dumb ASS OFF!....LOL!
Who gives a crap, you dumb ass? I know Mello Rolls are candy. I know who Gabe Kaplan. So what?

I've been trying to make you realize how old and ridiculous you sound using such childish remarks. Stop making a fool of yourself.

This is not news. I heard this 40 years ago. Getting a degree in some bullshit liberal arts thing from a snobby private school is meaningless. You need to study something like _____ Engineering at a school that knows what they are doing.

College may not be for everyone. If it isn't for you then go to a good trade school and learn a trade that is in demand. Like ________ Mechanic or something.

In the mean time, take whatever job you can get and start paying off your student loans yourself.

What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
