Are they closing because of the economy? I heard it was a nice school. What will happen to the students?

There are some good private schools in the area that are much more affordable than the Academy. To even think that residents of this area can afford $10,000 yr tuition to send a child to their school was ridiculous.

Then after collecting tuition from the chosen few students they had, they went out and recruited basketball players from Africa and numerous foreign countries. None of these students could pay tuition and came on full scholarships.

This was just an attempt to start a basketball program that could rival "Oak Hill Academy" and the other prep schools who are known for their basketball teams.

The experiment failed.

That is very expensive for this area. I heard they were more interested in their basketball program and their baseball program which also recruited players from the Dominican Republic, just like the basketball, and most of them also could not pay.

Why not make it affordable to the kids in this area and let them be able to attend a nice prep school. There are many kids who would have loved to have a chance to attend a prep school and experience a great learning experience. I'm sure they would of had more kids than they could except.

Why can't Beckley do something for their kids!!!!

Your tuition estimate is incorrect. My child attended the academy and it was a wonderful school and tuition was ncome based. So acting as if parents were paying this huge amount of money and the" chosen few" remark was all ridiculous. The basketball team did come from various countries and were sponsered by a company or someone in order to attend the school, so they were not on a free ride per say and the rest of the parents making up for their tuition.
The school closed because Dr. Polk decided on a whim to close it with no regard for the staff , students, or families. It's a shame
because it was a great school.

That whim Dr. Polk decided on was $165,000 debt they ran up this year and was expected to be at 300,000 by next year.

If that $165,000 could be $300,000 by next year, then I understand why they closed. Thats alot of debt. I wish the Faculty, and students good luck in the future.

My child goes to Greater Beckley Christian School. They are awesome there and very nice. There is only about 170 kids in attendance but that makes it funner for the kids, no competition for sports, your automatically on the team. Tuition isn't that expensive and you have to have a pastors recommendation so that you have a christian background. My child loves it and they love him back!

I feel bad for the teachers. I pray they are able to find jobs soon. I hope they at least gave them a little notice. Public school will acccept the kids but the Teachers will have a harder time being relocated.

Wow! If you are truely a teacher , then I feel sorry for anyone who has you for a teacher. Any person calling children dumb and dumbos has no business being around children in the first place. My child in no way is dumb but from our remark it sounds like you may very well be lacking in many things.
I hear Greater Beckley is a good school and will be looking into that school as a choice. Anything would he better than the classroom the commenting teacher is in !

I am a graduate of Mountain State University Academy and I am truly sadden for the teachers and the students. MSUA was the best decision my parents ever made for me. I look back now and could have never pictured myself attending any other school. I wish the best for all staff and students alike. I hope with time they will reconsider.

Is MSU and MSUA the same thing? Is MSU, for college students closing?

MSU is way over-rated. They harrass students all the time in various ways. Each semester they send out staunch warning letters to all students with a GPA less than 3.0 telling them they are on financial aid probation - even if they pay CASH.

They are very unprofessional in other areas. They constantly lose documents and then harass students to furnish them again or they will not furnish grades, or suspend them from registering for more classes.

Some teachers there are teaching and don't have any experience in their field. I won't mention any names but there are medical programs there with a national reputation for harassing students. It seems to be a game with some of the 'leadership' of those programs to torture students.

Regardless of the pretty buildings you see - there is much array at MSU. Things are really dirty behind the scenes. It was bad when I graduated and much worse now.

When Marshall, WVU and Concord open more programs in Beckley it will be the demise of MSU.

MSU the college is nowhere near closing. They have continued to grow and have branches all over the place now. I believe they are bigger than Concord and many other schools now. That place has a ton of money.

Greater Beckley probably is a nice school. I played sports to try and win state titles, not to have everyone who tries out make the team. That is for little kids.

N,o parent will ever admit that they have dumb kids, but believe me MSU academy has to give them a grade because they had to keep
enough enrollment , and because the parents were paying for it.
In my teacher dictionary: private school are for the dumb and
I am proud to be teacher and telling you reality of dumboos.

Through my 4 year duration at MSUA, I can assure you I nor any other student was "given" any sort of academic help from the staff. They were instances in which you were put on academic probation and taken out of sports and extracurricular activities until your GPA was satisfactory of the school's requirements. Also while I was in attendance it was strictly a high school, grades 9-12, and the whole administration was different. I can proudly say my teachers were excellent and I learned more at MSUA then I did while I attended public school, but that is not to put down public schools in any way. Private school is just what personally worked for me. As for the teachers having taught in public schools before, I know of a few but I can't vouch for each one.

It's my understanding that the teacher on the current staff are all certified teachers and have taught in public schools and will Noe have to find jobs at other schools , since they lost their job 2 weeks before school starts.
To the techer who obviously has problems, stop being a jerk. There are kids who graduated from the academy with full scholarships to westpoint and other top 10 universities. So the story that kids are given grades is ridiculous. I bet you wanted to teach there or maybe even was let go at some point in the past from the academy and now want to lash out and show your ignorance. Again, hope my child never has you as a teacher!
