Mountain State University received nearly $43 million in taxpayer-subsidized grants and scholarships, even though very few undergraduates at the Beckley-based private school finish their degree within six years.

I think it's so interesting that Charleston picks up these stories while the Register-Herald ignores the situation that is in their back yard! As I lose faith in MSU, I lose it in my local newspaper as well (Register-Herald). The school seems to lack integrity and so does the paper by turning a blind eye. We shouldn't have to rely on another paper to tell us what's going on in our own community. Shame on MSU and shame on The Register-Herald!

Carl "Butch" Antolini Editor at the Register-Herald is not only on the MSU Board of Directors for the MSU Foundation he also teaches at MSU. Now why would he write such articles or even allow other reporters when he serves the school? Oh lets not forget the loss of advertising dollars. I quit reading the "Register - Rag" a long time ago. The Charleston Gazette at least seems more objective.

It seems that during the interview, Mr. Reed left out the hundreds of international students that MSU cannot account for. He also left out the Homeland Security is investigating MSU and hopes to have their certification pulled that allows international students.

Meanwhile, Mountain State President and CEO Charles Polk received more than $1.8 million in compensation in 2009, according to a Form 990 filed with the Internal Revenue Service. That is more than three times West Virginia University President Jim Clements'$550,000 salary for 2011-12.
The Register Herald must be protecting Polk>>>Amazing how this gets in other newspapers before it hits Beckley. What a scam MSU is....

Your inability to spell and use correct punctuation is indicative of one who could clearly benefit from an education at MSU.

I got news for you, Mrs. Bowling - NONE OF THE PA STUDENTS WILL GRADUATE IN MAY.  NONE - ZERO.

You want to know why?

1) Because their clinical rotations will not be done until late summer 2012 at best. So, how can you possibly graduate a student before they are done? Is this too hard for you to understand???????

2) Many students (a majority) have FAILED tests due to not being taught material. Yet the PA Program has been using exams from Exam Master and the USMLE (a testing exam level for Doctors) on material that was never taught by faculty. Just how to you justify giving students such a hard exam when you didn't teach them these medical principles and concepts? HOW ???????

And some students from the Class of 2011 have recently completed ALL requirements for graduation, and STILL DO NOT HAVE A DIPLOMA - and have written the office MANY TIMES and can't even get a reply.

So, lets all get REAL.  Why tell students something that is purely fictional?  Is it so hard to be honest and just tell them that if MSU does not get accredited, their diploma wont be accepted by ANY EMPLOYER EVER and ALL THEIR TUITION IS WASTED???  Why is honesty so hard for you??

$100,000 WASTED !

I got some news for you Mrs. Bowling.. coming to MSU was the worst mistake of your life.  If Polk loses accreditation (which I hope DOES NOT happen)-- I WILL be the worst day of his life. I promise.

Here is another example of an adminstrator with NO experience in higher education. What would she really know about accreditation? How much you wanna bet she was coached by Polk on what to say?

She is being as honest as the administration is being with her. Deans, faculty, and staff have been given a Q & A paper that tells them exactly what to say if a question is asked....I agree, honesty is the best policy, why lie or try to hide it? But, it comes from the top down Polk started this mess, now faculty have to be sanctioned in their responses lol...Demand his resignation along with all 7 VP's....that's the only way anything will change.

Yes, she has been coached on her answers as have all the rest, but I disagree with you on her lack of knowlege on accreditation. She was CEO of the hospital for a number of years....she knows about accreditation issues, maybe not the academic aspect as far as teaching but she knows her stuff when it comes to how to meet accrediting standards.

"has own opinion" must be Dr. Artis. Now, she is running a campaign to be the next President of MSU by throwing Dr. Polk out of MSU. Good attempt, Dr. Artis. Can you save MSU? You are much better than Dr. Polk. All the best.

So, tell me, dear writer - JUST HOW DOES THAT JUSTIFY HER LYING TO THE PA CLASS IN HER SPEECH YESTERDAY???????? HUH???

If you profess she has so much knowledge about accreditation,(which I agree she probably does)-- they WHY TELL A BARE FACE LIE TO A CLASS? Why stoop so low as to ruin your reputation for some evil bastard who is milking the school of million in his salary?
If your answer is the same as mine it is THIS:

BECAUSE SHE HAS NO MORALS OR ETHICS.

Now, tell us something we don't already know, big shot.

First of all I don't have to justify anything and I'm not condoning any lies that have been told to the PA program students or to any student for that matter. But, as far as knowledge of accreditation standards she is very intelligent. You are a student, and yes you should be extremely upset but you don't have any knowledge concerning accreditation standards for the University or for any Health Science program so stick to what you know....big shot :)

Don't jump to conclusions. But the poster was right - Karen Bowling told the PA Class lies. Did I ruin her reputation? NO, DUMBASS-- she did.

Dr. Artis has a great reputation on campus and throughout Beckley. The only people I ever see or hear saying anything in the negative about her are you and your idiot buddies on Topix. If you are so big and bad why not post with your real name or better yet hop on your broom stick and fly on over to MSU and confront her. BIG SHOT. LOL.

Oh, btw, I can show you about 400 posts of people who would disagree with you about 'Dr.' Artis.
It was you who brought her into this. I think the other poster just exposed Karen Bowling for telling lies to the PA class. eh?

I know Karen, and I would much rather have her in a position if power than Polk--any day! She may not have a strong background in higher education, but she does know how to whip a ship into shape! She's one of the best resources that MSU could have right now.

If she is as good as you say then it would be in her best interest to learn higher education from reputable sources and not listen to the bull crap Polk and some of those administrators are feeding her.

I do agee with you on many points that you are making, but I have a few questions because there are just some things I don't understand about MSU's program design.

I know several MSN students who "graduated" in May, but still haven't been allowed to take the certification test, or still have clinical time to do. This is strange to me because the college I went to wouldn't allow you to graduate until all of the requirements are met. If that meant not graduating until August because the clinical requirements weren't met, that's the way it was. But on the flip side, when you graduated, you were done--no dragging things out.

It seems like that's also happening in the PA program, if I understand correctly. Does this happen in all of the programs?

Does MSU intentionally add these nonsensical tests at the end of their programs to get more tuition because the college is trying to wring every penny possible out of students?

I'm empathetic for all of the students currently enrolled... but not for the new ones who are starting into the programs from this point on. It's clear that this college has major issues, and anyone who gets into the mess knowing the facts that have come to light is almost deserving of the problems they are getting themselves into.

LOL, did I upset you? I'm not the one trashing Ros, you are and the 400 posts you are talking about have been written by a very small group of people just changing post names. No, I didn't bring her into this, I was simply replying to a post about her. As for Karen Bowling lying to the PA class, I don't know I wasn't there. I only have the word of some random poster on here. What I do know about her is she's a straight shooter, she's good at what she does, and if anyone can turn around a failing program its her. So, until you have something intelligent to comment please comment to someone else. You are out whitted, out smarted, and just out numbered.
