There's nothing unusual about education. It's been common in Georgia since the 1860s. Nothing unusual about white sponsors of black students either. This is not news!

Many northern abolitionists came south to open all black schools after the Civil War using federal money. They taught hatred of white southerners and were stunned to discover that most blacks still looked upon their former owners as their benefactors. These blacks missed their three meals a day, their free houses, free medical care, free old age care, and steady work. Freedom forced them out on their own and education wasn't any good to them when all they learned was blame, blame, blame. Most of the northern teachers eventually went back north, convinced that blacks were unteachable.
Southern run schools were much different. They taught trades to blacks so they could find jobs.
