Secretary of Defense Gates says we are cutting back on weapons development, while Navy Secretary Winter says the Navy is stretched too thin to deal with pirates. And it's tragic to see security being put at risk, due to weakness of our new Administration. Also, why are U.S. Sailors required on this ship (of aid)? Or is the cargo arms shipments to the current Kenyan war lord?

I think the point was the U.S. can't be the police for the worlds international waters. I agree.

Not sure if we can have a Navy escort for every ship. But every cargo/merchant ship should have sidearms on board. I thought that was already the case.

Reread the article, Sparky.....No US Navy Personnel this ship - they were most likely merchant marines...

It is odd the ship was flying under the US flag though....Most merchant ships are registered in places like Panama or Liberia...

Also, if you are going to like Secretary Gates' decisions to kill the obsolete and hideously expensive F22 program and other "money pits" to an act of piracy in which the crew took the ship back, you need to stop hitting the airplane glue so hard.

And just how does all that like to the President? Please just go back to your treehouse and wait for your next issue of Soldier of Fortune to arrive....

And yes, the Raptor's wonderous stealth technology is obsolete.......Do some research on passive radar systems.

American companies are criminal for not arming sailors that ply the waters of the Arabian Sea, the east coast of Africa and the Maalacca Straits. For years we have been asking for the basics of slf defense from the owners of the companies we work for. Most of us are former military and well versed in the use of fire arms. Five or Six M-4's or AKs and the hijacking would never have happened.

((((There are fewer than 200 U.S.-flagged vessels in international waters, said Larry Howard, chair of the Global Business and Transportation Department at SUNY Maritime College in New York.)))))

Strange that with LESS than 200 USA Flagged Commercial Vessels in ALL the WORLD'S Oceans/Seas one just happen to be in this Area.

USA Cargo/Tanker Ships operating in the WORLD'S Oceans/Seas are about as rare as Hen's TEETH compared to all the other counties commercial vessels operating in the WORLD'S Oceans/Seas.

With less than 200 USA Flagged Vessels the USA could just about assign a Military Ship to Escort each one of them--or maybe two.

This the FIRST TIME in about 200 years PIRATES have attacked/ taken over a USA FLAGGED SHIP.

Now if the Somali Pirates Mother Ship is not found and sunk ---

and Somali's Ships, Boats, Rafts Inner Tubes leaving Somali' Shores that the USA Navy DESIRES to Board Search is not done--

and if WEAPONS, Smaller Speed Boats are found---

IMMEDATELY SINK THE VESSEL-

this BS will continue---

THERE ONE THING THAT DOES NOT NEED TO HAPPEN is to destroy one single BUILDING, BRIDGE, or anything else in Somali---

or

it will be here we go again----

RE-BUILD/BUILD THE COUNTRY's INFRASTUCTURE AND TRY TO MAKE THEM ALL NICE LITTLE DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS--

Really? You think that by sinking a few ships we will stop Piracy? You think that by leaving them shelter and the ability to regroup and rearm is a good idea?

You must not live in the real world.

Why are we dispatching warships to handle what basically amounts to punks in rubber rafts?
A redneck with a .30-06 deer rifle and scope can put a swift end to that. Heck, they'd probably offer to ride along for free.

When the pirates saddles up alongside the ship, one of the crew could toss a pail full of gasoline and a lit flare down into their raft.

You could drop a 20" TV down from the deck on top of their heads.

Don't even bother reporting the incident, just steam on wherever you're going and leave the pirates in open water to nurse their wounds or sink to the bottom of the sea.

First of all dumb ass, I am not blaming my country. I used to work for ExxonMobil on their oil tankers, and I have personally sailed these waters where the piracy is happening. When asked if we could arm ourselves,(the ships officers were all for it), the company said that it would amount to an international incident if we happened to kill a pirate, so no weapons. Therefore we sail into these waters with fire hoses and luck. The government has nothing to do with whether American shipping comapnies arm their crews. Just like it still not against the law to have booze on board a ship. ExxonMobil policy is that there is no drinking on board their vessels. That is also why the Coast Guard could not take Joe Hazlewood's license. He didn't do anything wrong. I am fully aware of what the aplogist Obama is doing. What I want American shipping companies to do is man up and not take piracy lying down. Other countries arm their crews, believe that. We are just scared shitless to do so because it might not be politcally correct. Don't shoot from the hip asshole, you will miss the target every time.

I guess you think it would be GOOD IDEA to BUILT/RE-BUILT Somali spending many, many BILLIONS of DOLLARS trying to WIN their HEARTS and MIND. Make them all nice Little Republicans and Democrats.
AFTER the lose of USA Military Personnel lives on the ground in Somali.

While the rest of the WORLD watch, BENEFIT of course WHILE having a good time cussing the USA.

Let the rest of the Countries worry about the Ships Flying their Flags.

Put enough HURT on the Somali Pirates
to the point they WOULD NEVER DREAM of attacking another SHIP flying the USA Flag----

DEMAND---and COLLECT hundred of MILLIONS of DOLLARS from the Somali Pirates to pay for the EXPENSE of our Military Ships having to respond.

SINK enough of their Mother Ships and other VESSELS just because they any weapons---PERIOD for effects

If that does not work sink them ALL.

Sooner or later they will UNDERSTAND or there will not be even Somali INNER TUBES in the OCEAN.

Planes and Ship flying the USA FLAG in INTERNATIONAL Air Space and WATERS passengers/Crews and vessels safety IS THE RESPONSIBLE of the USA Government from armed ATTACK by anyone, groups, pirates or another Government Armed Forces.

AS LONG AS IT IS NOT A LAST MINUTE RE-FLAGGING TO THE USA FLAG LIKE BUSH 1 let the Tanker's DO when threaten by IRAN.

None this of BS of last MINUTES minute re-flagging for Protection when the Companies have for years had their vessels fly Flags from other countries to avoid USA TAXES, LABOR LAWS, SAFETY LAWS AND ETC.

There's even more in relation to this sensationalized media hype. We haven't learned anything, since 911, we just glory is our pseudo patriotic fervor. Two destroyers despatched along with multiple special ops teams? for a cargo ship carrying aid? I am just saying.
