The article is about the crew members on merchant ships. They are civilians, not soldiers, idiot.

I did some fending when I took martial arts class when a young thing. Fending, in that case, was sorta like helping them pass by without much effort on my part, kinda thing work for someone small as me. I think you fend a pirate with some sort of explosive or ballistical things.

But, pirates?! As my friend N.(you know who you is!) always say, Plus ca change, plus c'est le meme chose. Then she drink her vin ordinaire and shrug.

training to fend off pirates, BIG DEAL. They should be sending small guided missle boats as escorts and just blow the pirates out of the water. If they blew up 2 or 3 pirate boats, there wouldn't be this problem.

This whole Muslim Pirate thing is beginning to sound like the first expedition of the U.S. Marines.
When then President-elect Jefferson sent the Marines to the shores of Tripoli, battling the Muslim pirates of the Bey of Algiers.

Some things never seem to change with those Islamo fundies.

Merchant sailors. And it would be the NAVY, not the army. You see, we in America actually have one for the seas AND for the land. And, believe it or not, one for the air. Amazing, isnt it?

You know what they say about pirates and those long voyages with no women. And sure enough, they had to use the words seaman and pirates in the same sentence.

Met a Pirate once, he wore an Eye Patch and had a Hook for a hand.
I asked if he lost the eye the same time as the hand?
He said,"No, no, I lost the eye the day they put the hook on my arm. Went to rub my eye,...forgot I had the Hook."
Aaarrgh!
