Same-Sex Parenting: The Effect On Children Raised By Gay Or Lesbian Parents

Jun 11, 2012 Full story: MediLexicon 60

Despite considerable research showing that children of same-sex parents fare just as well as children with heterosexual parents, two papers - a review of existing studies and a new study - published in Elsevier's Social Science Research , find insufficient data to draw any definitive conclusions.

The federal appeals court that twice upheld Florida's ban on homosexual adoption received extensive data proving that having both a father and mother in the home is one of the best indicators of a child's future success in life. There is no such data to support homosexual adoption.

Which didn't YOU need, a father or a mother?

Mr. Eggebeen nailed it. There are simply too many factors to consider in a study like this that seem to be neglected. Not to mention the base comparison it self is rather flawed.

I personally Know a lesbian couple that is proof enough of how lesbian couples effect children.

My friend whom we'll call B, her half sister was on drugs, poor, just messed up in general. I mean the kind of person who couldn't get it together enough to make trailer trash a working life style. B and her wife ( yes folks we live in IA its legal here) took B's sister's children in, all 4 of them and gave them a stable life.

B and her wife LOVE those children, they provide for them the same if not better then any heterosexual couple of the same social and economic standing. Because B was unable to have children of her own so she sees this children as a god send and treats them as such.

B's done so well by those children that even when her half sister had for the most part cleaned up her act, she asked B to continue to keep the children. And the children have flourished in this same sex parent house hold. It will be years before we see if they become smokers as seems to be focus of people like Mr. Regnerus.

But I can tell you that Had it not been for this lesbian couple, these children would have ended up like their birth parents, poor white, drug addicted trash with no future. Instead they have a loving, healthy, happy home and opportunities and experiences in life they other wise would not have had and are the better for it.

A father thank you for asking. Mine was a dead beat alcoholic, and I was raised in a single parent house hold. Did just fine thanks.

Also I think the article just put forth proof that there is in fact data supporting it that was done by the APA. So...ya... you fail, you hate mongering troll.

I raise my hand for the father. And don't confuse the provider of half the genetics with the colloquial use of "father", they are not necessarily one in the same.

Ah... gotta love the smell of flawed research in the morning...:
According to his findings, children of mothers who have had same-sex relationships were significantly different as young adults on 25 of the 40 (63%) outcome measures, compared with those who spent their entire childhood with both their married, biological parents. For example, they reported significantly lower levels of income, more receipt of public welfare, lower levels of employment, poorer mental and physical health, poorer relationship quality with current partner, and higher levels of smoking and criminality.
Note the emphasis on comparing NON-MARRIED relationships to MARRIED relationships.

According to one of the two witnesses the proponents of Prop8 brought to court to SUPPORT the ban, David Blankenhorn even testified that allowing gays and lesbians to marry would IMPROVE the wellbeing of their households and their children.

Could it be that these children are disadvantaged simply because their parents were disadvantaged due to lack of marriage equality?

the only problems would be from OUTSIDE forces - period....the same crap I heard back in the 60's with Inter-racial dating/marrying (what about the children meme BS) - its because of OTHER people's bias that any problem occur.

...I realize Convenience Sampling makes the entire study illegitimate, but honestly... how can one fairly take a random sample of same-sex parents?

There's no list of same-sex parents to pick at random from. It's a study that needs to be followed anyway. With such intensity, the only way a study like that would be carried through would be by a group so heavily invested in one outcome (like a religious group trying to find that the kids are at a disadvantage or a gay-rights group trying to find that the kids are not at a disadvantage).

I like how it took to the last paragraph to point out something glaringly obvious:

"In a final comment on Regnerus' research, Pennsylvania State University, sociologist and professor Paul Amato points out, "If growing up with gay and lesbian parents were catastrophic for children, even studies based on small convenience samples would have shown this by now [...] If differences exist between children with gay/lesbian and heterosexual parents, they are likely to be small or moderate in magnitude - perhaps comparable to those revealed in the research literature on children and divorce." I think a lead "expert" testifying there was Dr. Rekers. He got a lot of money to testify.

And we know about Dr. Rekers' luggage handling incident.

It's too sick for words. And of course if the data were so compelling every state would have bans similar to FL, but they don't. Because the evidence Dr. Rekers presented - prior to being caught going to Italy with a rentboy - was too nonsensical even for homophobes in other right wing states to accept.

Nothing wrong with a summary and examination of ongoing research.

If the summary and the research is well done, of course.

Inconclusive is valid result in science, soft or hard.

Two new studies we are going to be hearing much more about in the coming days and weeks. The first is by Prof. Mark Regnerus:

"Two studies released Sunday may act like brakes on popular social-science assertions that gay parents are the same as — or maybe better than — married, mother-father parents."

“The empirical claim that no notable differences exist must go,” Mark Regnerus, a sociology professor at the University of Texas at Austin, said in his study in Social Science Research."

"Using a new,“gold standard” data set of nearly 3,000 randomly selected American young adults, Mr. Regnerus looked at their lives on 40 measures of social, emotional and relationship outcomes."

"He found that, when compared with adults raised in married, mother-father families, adults raised by lesbian mothers had negative outcomes in 24 of 40 categories, while adults raised by gay fathers had negative outcomes in 19 categories."

"Findings such as these do not support claims that there are “no differences” between gay parenting and heterosexual, married parents, said Mr. Regnerus, who helped develop the New Family Structures Study at the university."

"And a second study by Prof. Loren Marks:"

"The second study, also in Social Science Research, takes a critical look at the basis of an oft-cited American Psychological Association (APA) report on gay parenting."

"The APA brief says,“Not a single study has found children of lesbian or gay parents to be disadvantaged in any significant respect relative to children of heterosexual parents,” said Loren Marks, associate professor at the School of Human Ecology at Louisiana State University."

"However, after looking at the 59 studies that undergird this assertion,“the jury is still out,” Mr. Marks said.“The lack of high-quality data leaves the most significant questions [about gay parenting] unaddressed and unanswered.”

"Problems with the APA-cited studies were their tiny size; dependence on wealthy, white, well-educated lesbian mothers; and a failure to examine common outcomes for children, such as their education, employment and risks for poverty, criminality, early childbearing, substance abuse and suicide. Instead, the APA studies often looked at children’s gender-role behaviors, emotional functioning and sexual identity."
