Martin University students protest firings
#1 Nov 5, 2008
Since the firing of Harry Murphy, students have approached me with stories of being called on their jobs with threats of expulsion from school for speaking up, as well as, threats of getting students fired from their jobs. Just this week, I heard that a teacher was called into the OFFICE and reprimanded, because a student wrote the president to ask if a particular teacher was going to be fired. We are there for education. The education we now receive is about the fear tactics of how a new administrator comes into power and turns a powerful, healing university of economically diverse students to an analogy of a concentration camp. Acts of verbal and emotional terrorism are present at Martin University, where the halls and office have the finest surveillance systems, where students whisper for fear of reprisal to exercise their First Amendment Right of Freedom of Speech, where faculty are afraid to show emotion or speak with students, and where everyone looks out for spies to tell information to the president to earn points. WHY ARE THESE CONDITIONS ACCEPTABLE? My friends in Belize, Central America, wonder how this can happen in the US college. Students who wanted to come to Martin University have changed their minds. WHERE IS THE HELP? If my teachers are truly fired for not being qualified, then is my earned degree disqualified, too?????? Stop or drive by this Friday evening. Just maybe there will be some concerned students, citizens, and others wanting to be heard again.
