LEXINGTON, Va.(AP) Americans today are self-indulgent and don't make the sacrifices that their parents and grandparents did, and the nation's leaders don't ask people to act for the higher good, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said Monday at a Virginia college in a rare public speech.

ok justice thomas when are our nations leaders going to work for this countries gretaer good? all they do is partisan bickering and infighting for their political parties and nothing good gets done. our nations leaders and politicians need to lead by example and with the example they are showing did you expect anything else?

i thought this man was supposed to be intelligent, maybe i'm wrong....

Actually, we are better off that the government rarely gets things done. That is no excuse for citizens to act like self-indulgent morons.

I agree with Thomas. I'm liberal and young, but it's true. Most of my friends have worked for what they have and what they want, however, I do have some friends that have a bizarre sense of entitlement even though they haven't done the work to get there.

I disagree with "centereach" about the nation's leaders leading by example...it's up to our parents, and us, to teach this responsibility and accountability. Politics are politics -- and politicians will never NOT bicker. That is not the point here.

People can't expect everything to be handed to them. That's unacceptable and delusional.

I agree with you, although I know a lot of parents who teach responsibility and work and the kids still act like they have a sense of entitlement. I can't always blame the parents. I have two siblings who grew up with me and act like they were raised in the forest. People make choices that best fit their selfish interests. My parents were very sacrificing, and if they didn't have the cash, they didn't get the item. Plain and simple. There was borrowing and racking up debt like people do today. They know what it means to pay off a mortgage. Today people want more home than they can afford, and more car than they can afford and even though they can't pay for it, they still want more toys too.

Its so true. Kids/young adults today are spoiled brats, who literally thinks the world revolves around themselves and America. But, its not because of politics, its because of LAME parenting that allows kids to look up sports athletes and pop stars for role models.

What he said is so true, so why didn't those politicians that had all those earmarks inputted into the budget have the same frame of thinking as the Justice. It is not just ordinary Americans it is all of the politicians.

There were just as many self centered people in the past, as is today.
Think of people who allowed priests to molest children for over 70 years.
Think of the way they allowed the MAFIA and street gangs to grow, without trying to stop them.
Think of the growth in illegal drug usage.
THINK OF THE innocent people who have been sent to prison for over 40 years, in states like ILLINOIS and TEXAS!!!
Think of the people who IGNORED the fact that Hollywood subversives OPENLY TRIED TO ASSASSINATE Presidents Ford and Reagan, and I was the only person to report these criminals!!!!
Think of the numerous times that the Soviets tried to invade the USA, and only one person (ME) got off his butt to stop them!
MY POINT:
People in the past selfishly ignored their duty as Americans, and allowed all of these injustices to occur!
It is like that book, "America's Greatest Generation". IT IS A BUNCH OF HALF TRUTHS, that ignores all of the BAD and CRIMINAL activities that old farts allowed to take place, with out lifting a finger to stop any of it!!!

What do you not understand?
I gave examples of how people in the past were NOT GREAT PEOPLE WHO SACRAFICED EVERYTHING! They actually sat on their BUTTOCKS and allowed major crimes to continue for decades!
If you are REALLY FROM CHICAGO, then you should KNOW who I am and that I AM RIGHT! I grew up in the suberbs of Chicago and Pres. Reagan said that I WAS THE PERSON WHO ACTUALLY WON THE COLD WAR!
Before I started to defeat the Soviets, our worthless government was basically feeding all of you Americans a load of manure, and they were not even trying to win the cold war. It made me angry, AND I PROVED THAT THE US GOVERNMENT WASTED BILLIONS FROM WWII till 1970, when I started my work!
