Readers continue to demonstrate that many people still have praise for the policies of the Bush White House, as does outgoing federal Homeland Security head Michael Chertoff. They cite a lack of homeland terrorist activity, passage of the Patriot Act, and our occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq as a positive strategy that keeps terrorism at bay.
What these people fail to acknowledge is that we have had a leadership vacuum in Washington for the past 8 years, and this is squarely the fault of the outgoing President and a support base that was unwilling to be critical of mistakes. The "leadership qualities" cited by these supporters cannot be divorced from despotism: the ends do not justify the means, lest we sink to the same level of depravity as our aggressors. Congressional Acts that limit personal freedom damage the Constitution and our Nation, and imperialism does not beget world peace, nor does it establish the United States as a world leader.
Coercion and arrogance are not the qualities of a true leader. As a corporate manager, I have served under good and bad leaders -- and the bad ones are always either incompetent, oppressive, or both. A good leader inspires a following -- and builds a successful organization -- by exercising good judgment and fairness, and demonstrating intelligence, not arrogance and brutishness. There is a strong chance now that real leadership will once again come to this great country -- the challenges are enormous, but quality of leadership will always make a positive difference in the results.
