A group of American Jewish activists and leaders has signed a petition calling on the Israelis and Palestinians to offer significant concessions and commitments by both sides to enable the extremely fragile proximity talks to succeed.
The petition, which models itself after a similar initiative by a group of European Jews last month, has garnered the signatures of some of the most highly placed Jewish thinkers and activists.
The list includes Jeffrey Solomon, the chief executive of the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Philanthropies, Rabbi Ellen Weinberg Dreyfus, the head of the Reform rabbinates umbrella body, and Prof. Steven Cohen, a respected Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion scholar of Jewish sociology and demographics.
We believe without reservation that Israel is the national home of the Jewish people, the petition states, quoting from Israels own Declaration of Independence, and we therefore feel both entitled and obligated to make our views known.
As with the European JCall petition and the Washington-based J Street organization, this petition also endorse[s] the American governments vigorous encouragement of the parties to make the concessions necessary for negotiations to advance.
Together with all Israeli citizens, both Jews and Arabs, we lament the decades of death and destruction that have plagued the Land of Israel, it reads. We categorically condemn terrorism and we mourn the tragic loss of blood and treasure that has afflicted the region over the years.
However,at the same time, we abhor the continuing occupation that has persisted for far too long; it cannot and should not be sustained.
Ultimately, the long-term security and welfare of the democratic Jewish State of Israel depend upon a genuine resolution of the conflict within the framework of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in comity, the petition states.
Citing the extremely fragile hope for peace represented by the proximity talks, the petition calls on Israel to immediately cease construction of housing in the disputed territories, dismantle the settlements considered illegal under Israeli law, and protect Palestinians from maltreatment and violence by extreme elements of the settler community.
It also calls on Israel to set aside its insistence on exclusive sovereignty over all of expanded Jerusalem, including Arab neighborhoods, where, we anticipate, the designated capital of the new state of Palestine will be located.
The Palestinians, too, must end terrorism and set aside their claimed right of return to Israel, which would undermine the very notion of a Jewish state.
They must also vigorously oppose incitement against Israel.
While acknowledging that it is the citizens of Israel and their neighbors who will decide on their future, the petition insists on the signatories right to call attention to decisions the government of Israel takes which, in our view, endanger the State we hold so dear.

I agree, especially when the current "leadership" mindset coincides
with the likes of 'Alex' and "crazyworld" both working and paid by that leadership as shills.
I posted that article outlining the Israeli moderate's response to
the injustices perpetrated against the Palestinians by Israel, as a start in the right direction. The conscientious of a certain sector of prominent Israeli residents has been tweaked into recognising that the problem is 'not' all from one side as the likes of Alex and his cohorts try to fabricate.
If this document was published in another newspaper other that the far right "Jerusalem Post", Alex would contend that comes from an anti-semitic source and compiled by Jew haters.
There is no winning against people with a hidden agenda and without compassion and a sense of justice.
This is why to reply to these people in the understanding that they won't twist your meaning is an exercise in futility.
This is why I'm not wasting my time on them. I'm targeting those without an agenda in the hope that they will hear both sides and therefore make up their own minds as to who are the 'real' victims in this one sided war against humanity.

Hello reza june,
You're right on with "....why reply to people...."
I've yet to read a more accurate and humorous assessment of the the glut of Zionist cheerleaders for Atrocities: "concerned citizen"s "crazypeoplehere"s, "Alex"s etc than the following article:
Israels propagandists shoot themselves in the foot as they shoot off their mouths
September 30, 2009
If you have ever visited a blog or on-line discussion group on the Middle East you have doubtless had the misfortune to run into them.
They are known by the language they use: depraved sexual insults, bile, bigotry, threats, disinformation and character assassination. Thats right: Im talking about hasbarats, zionist trolls who infect the Internet with hasbara, pro-Israel propaganda. Of course, mainstream media hasbarats have been around for decades, as have hasbaratchiks, fifth-columns in foreign governments who subvert national policies to serve Israel. The Internet, though, is the latest, some might say the greatest, propaganda playground, and Israel cannot cope with factual, passionate, well-documented stories that expose its war crimes and unrepentant criminality.
If youve come across a hasbarat, on-line or otherwise, you have learned that no amount of reasoned argument or intellectual maturity has any effect. Thats because hasbarats dont care if they come across as ignorant, obnoxious, nasty or inane. All that matters for them is sabotaging criticism of Israel and support for Muslims. They're like anti-intellectual stink bombs: designed to cause maximum discomfort but have little if any real power.(END OF EXCERPT)
"Israel cannot cope with factual, passionate, well-documented stories that expose its war crimes and unrepentant criminality".
"They're like anti-intellectual stink bombs"
I have NEVER gotten a factual, rational, On-Topic documented response to ANYTHING I've posted relating to Zionist Bigotry, Terrorism, Atrocities etc etc.
For example, just now, "Alex" doesn't dispute that IDF is an "Army" of proven and documented child killers but quibbles about its placement
Zionism's "Ethnic Shield" is another desperately promoted fraud: Jews and Zionists ARE NOT the same thing.
Zionism is a relatively new (1870s-'80s) Race Fixated, Ultra-Nationalist, Expansionist, Mythology based, Hate Cult ,virtually identical to that OTHER Fascist Cult in Germany, and a repulsive stain on REAL Jews who oppose the perversion of their Culture and religion with these demented, deceptive Thugs
We need to use our time wisely; placating "anti intellectual stink bombs" isn't one of them.
