Film to feature Tallapoosa, local music

A documentary film scheduled for completion next summer will focus on traditional Southern fiddle music and will feature local interviews and footage of Haralson County.

When is Jerry Springer coming to do shows in Tallapoosa and Haralson County? He could get all locals on his show and stay there for weeks and not run out of people. Ha! Ha!

Maybe it will be about the music and not the residents AKA the "Possum People"

But I would bet this film crew does not put Tallapoosa in a positive spotlight to the rest of the world.....that would be to good to be true.

Since it is a local person doing the film I hope it puts Tallapoosa in a good spotlight. I agree the "Possum Snout" moniker has really hurt Tallapoosa. This issue has been covered extensively in other topics. I mean a music show called "Possum Pickins"!! Give me a damn break on the Possum crap. You do not see Pete Bridges running for the Senate in Georgia as the former Mayor of Possum Snout. The police cars say Tallapoosa Police not Possum Snout Police. My city bill is from Tallapoosa not Possum Snout. The Possum was killed crossing the road let him/her stay thta way, DEAD.

It seems Tallapoosa went by several names over the early years and this was just one of them. One story of a man who was so ugly his face was compared to that of a possum etc. To be honest I do not really care. I am totally turned off from any reference to the City of Tallapoosa using the possum moniker. It is demeaning to the history of this city to continue to promote "Possum Snout". Promote "Historic Tallapoosa". Check out this link and after reading it I hope you can see my point. Tallapoosa has many great things to be remembered by and used to promote the city without mentioning the possum. If you really want to know the answer contact the City of Tallapoosa. Get them to give the "FACTS". Since they make such a damn big publicity issue off the stupid possum surely they can verify the true history. Here is the link.

I did some more research and besides the explanation in the link above here are some other "legends" as to the name.

1. In the early part of the 1830's the old Indian council village of Charles Town became a mining settlement known as "Possum Snout", named by the gold miners who panned the waters of the Tallapoosa for the precious metal.
2.Chief Possum Snout of Creek Indian fame gave Tallapoosa its very first name.

In my opinion some of the best music every written came out of areas of poverty and unrest. People had to rely on their talents and whatever instruments they could gather up for entertainment. Hearing good old homegrown music like this is heartwarming and brings people closer together. Front porch, swing, sweet tea, and homegrown music. How could you get closer heaven without being there?
