Where does Michigan Connections Academy get their funding? My husband is skeptical because it is "free". Are there any hidden costs to the student's family?
This education option looks perfect for our oldest daughter. Looks too good to be true- text books are mailed and a loaner computer with stipend for internet access....... How is this school able to do that?

Hi Betsy,

I live in Texas and my kids are doing Connections Academy (CA) this year. CA is a public school so it is funded the same way and a regular brick and motor school. This is why it is free and they provide supplies for you to use. You will have to check with your CA, but as for mine it is ran through Houston ISD which is a school district in Houston. There are no hidden cost except for your normal school supplies that you would normally have to buy at a brick and motor school. Your child will be counted as attending the school district your CA goes through only you will be doing the work at home online not at the actual school. Hope this didn't confuse you. As for me homeschooling was something I have always wanted to do for my kids CA just gave me the confidence to do it.

It might be a little late replying to this.. My daughter is part of Wisconsin Connections Academy. The school is a licensed public school charter school operated by the Appleton School District. In my state the student must file open enrollment and apply to go to that school district.. Even though the school district is 120+ miles away, that school district is now my home school district. The funding that goes to my local school district is sent to Wisconsin Connections Academy. I really don't know the internal set up of connections academy. From what I can tell, they are obviously a commerical business operated by Sylvan Learning Center. They have a contract with Appleton School District to be a vendor for the online school. Yes, a lot of people argue that its a commerical business operating as a public school.. But in my opinion I think Connections Academy is more or less a curriculm. No differnt than if the school buys math books, english bocks from commerical vendors.

Hello,
My children are students of CA Michigan. I chose this school because I attended DPS as a child and all through high school my teachers did'nt do anything but sit on their butts and read rather than teach the class. I have grown to dis-trust the district with the education of my children because of my own experiences.

I have read the four posted comments regarding Connections Academy. I am an interested parent, looking into enrolling my middle-school-aged children into Michigan CA. Is there anyone else out there who has enrolled in the Michigan CA who is willing to give detailed pros and cons? Please!

Ty-Rhonda, can you please tell me your current experience with Michigan CA? Are you going to re-enroll your child(ren)? I am looking into this as an option and strongly desire input from other parents of Michigan CA.
