August 9, 2010 10:49 AM | No Comments Almost 29 percent of all home mortgages in the Chicago area were underwater during the year's second quarter, an improvement from the 31.8 percent level recorded in the first quarter, Zillow reported Monday.

Still, far more mortgages locally are underwater, meaning more is owed on the loans than they homes are worth, than nationally. Zillow, an online real estate site, said the number of single-family homes nationally that are underwater was 21.5 percent in the second quarter, compared with 23.3 percent in the first quarter and 23 percent a year ago.

2 charged in Logan Square shooting
Wednesday, June 27, 2007

June 26, 2007 (WLS)-- Murder charges were filed Wednesday against two men in the shooting of a 13-year-old girl. Police say a stray bullet from gang gunfire killed Schanna Gayden earlier this week.

Logan Square community members marched Wednesday in the hope of getting guns off the street and bringing an end to the random violence that claimed the life of an innocent 13-year-old girl, Schanna Gayden.

"The reason we're here is to light a fire under everything and make them see that all the gang turf wars and violence and all of that stuff must stop," said Rita Sallie, Schanna's mother.

The seventh grader had just bought watermelon from a street vendor near a school playground when gunfire rang out on Monday night. Police say a gang member was firing at opposing gang members. Schanna was caught in the middle with nowhere to hide.

Investigators say 19-year-old Tony Serrano has confessed to the shooting and 26-year-old Mwenda Murithi, the alleged leader of the gang, is also facing murder charges.

"Serrano confessed to the shooting and provided details on how Murithi ordered the shooting," said Superintendent Phil Cline, Chicago Police.

Murithi has a long criminal history, including 28 arrests in the last four years, four of them felonies. Serrano has been arrested three times, including a charge of reckless conduct.

An honor student, Schanna was looking forward to eighth grade at Ames Middle School. The principal announced Wednesday night plans to rename the school's gym in her honor and to keep the message of her murder fresh.

"We have way too many kids just dying for no apparent reason whatsoever. And so something has to change," said Benjamin Zayes, Schanna's basketball coach.
