I realize that most of the money was donated, but it seems like a waste to have spent all that money on sports. I have nothing against sports and I'm happy for PHS having such a great complex. It just seems like a lot of that money could have been put to better things.

I have children in that school system, and since the money was donated for that specific thing, it has to be used for it.

Portsmouth gets a lot of criticism, but I really believe they are doing the best they can for their students. Many graduates go on to higher education, and become contributing members of society. Portsmouth has alot of students that move in and out because of programs such as stepping stones or the homeless shelter. Then the district is testing students they may have only had a week or two before the test. If the state looked at kids they have had for two years in a row or more, I am sure their state testing results would be a totally different story.

Sorry, I know you didn't say anything about test scores, but I just got my children's test scores in the mail. They have gone there since kindergarten, and did great on their tests!

I was able to tour most of the new PHS building just before it opened for school that first year. What I saw tells me that it has great facilities for learning and for the benefit of the students. Portsmouth is lucky to have it, and the school buildings came before the athletic complex. Actually, up-to-date school facilities are a boost to the city, as a whole. Most of the county schools already had new buildings, so it is good that Portsmouth got theirs, too.

that's great. I wasn't meaning to sound like I was putting anyone down. And I know the money was donated for that purpose. I don't have a problem with that. I just think there are so many things that could have academically with even just 1/4 that amount. Not meaning to sound like put down. Sorry if it sounded that way.
