Episcopal Conservatives, Check Civil War History

There are 6 comments on the newsweek.washingtonpost.com story from Dec 17, 2008, titled Episcopal Conservatives, Check Civil War History. In it, newsweek.washingtonpost.com reports that:

Church votes and splits have been completely ineffective in keeping the tide of history from coming in. In the mid-19th Century, Southern divines invoked biblical literalism to support slavery and ultimately split from the Northern, increasingly anti-slavery churches. The anti-slavery churches argued that slavery was "inherently sinful" and therefore the whole of biblical revelation was against it. Eventually, the sinfulness of slavery has been acknowledged by the whole Christian church.

What does it tell you that conservative Episcopalians in Virginia who wish to split with the Episcopal Church invoked a Civil War-era law that lets Virginia churches keep their property when leaving a denomination where a "division" has occurred? A county judge in Virginia ruled in June that it was constitutional, based on that 1867 law, for the seceding churches in 2008 to keep their property. This does not decide the matter, of course, but it is a terrible symbolism that it should be a Civil War era law that is being used in this current struggle. Episcopal leaders hold that local church property is held in trust for the diocese and the denomination. People may leave, they say, but the church property remains with the denomination ...

"... In the last two years, support of same-sex marriage among young adults jumped 9 points since 2006, from 37% to 46%. This shift was evident across all religious traditions (e.g., young evangelical support for gay marriage increased from 17% to 24%)..."

This is nothing more than morality by polling and statistics.

Whatever he was thinking of, it's still morality by the numbers.

Well, no. I think he's talking about effectiveness, rather than morality.

I would agree that morality is not dictated by the numbers.

We're just "kindred spirits," and you seem to have no problem posting comments to anyone.

However, you do have an issue w/paragraphs on your story leads; use
before and after the graph, but add a forward slash (/) inside the last
, just to the left of the letter.

BTW, I'm looking at the author's picture and he's a "she".

I stand corrected. She's a smart one with a good clear understanding of the issues.
