WISE finds few brown dwarfs close to home
Our sun resides within a spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy about two-thirds of the way out from the center.

Beginning to see that life in the galactic disc may be a bit of a problem for brown dwarves.
They may get dumped on in a big way if they drift into the vicinity of a cold dark molecular cloud similar to rho ophiuchi.
The mass where the net infall of molecular gas & dust changes to a radiation induced impasse preventing condensation may be as much as 0.9 solar masses.
This may significantly alter the ratio of stars to brown dwarves in the disc, and likely will result in proof when the proper motions of nearby brown dwarves is revealed.
For them to survive any length of time they may have to be either halo objects or outer thick disc (particularly the old cold ones). The hot easily visible brown dwarves are the most likely disc denizens and most are likely as young as an A type star or be as old as 2 or 3 disc orbits.
May be far more important to compare the amount of old cold brown dwarves with the population of thick disc and halo stars such as Arcturus and Barnard's star.
This also raises implications for metallicity of red dwarves such as proxima centauri. This star may have been a brown dwarf that got the "munchies".
Have a nice day: Ag
