I know next to nothing about higher education and my next door neighbors kid was accepted to BU. His parents are all raving about him getting in but I am wondering if it's even considered a good school.

I know it's not Harvard but what schools is it like?

I'm an alumnus so I do have a bias. That being said BU is an excellent school, roughly on par with other large, urban, research universities such as New York University and the University of Southern California. It does have a smaller endowment, only a little over a billion dollars, so as a consequence it is ranked slightly below the two schools noted. It has had several Nobel Laureates on it's faculty and has had more than half a dozen Rhodes Scholars among it's alumni. Best of all it is in one of the most interesting cities in the nation. The Head of the Charles Regatta is a rowing event that draws "crews" from all over the world each October. The starting line is at the BU boathouse and ends near Harvard. And of course each April the world famous Boston Marathon is run by the "campus". You can perform a Google search and read all about Boston University's virtues and flaws because, as always, there are people that feel strongly about the university both pro and con. I hope the "kid" next door has a good time in Boston (I hope he or she doesn't mind cold weather)
and they will get a great education.

The short answer is yes, it is a good school. They have solid academic standards and a number of professors and programs they are known for. The problem BU faces is its location. In many parts of the country it would be a premier school for the region. In New England, however, it rests in the shadow of much more prestigious universities. Harvard you mentioned, but you also have Brown, Dartmouth, Boston College, Wellesley, and other top rated institutions in the mix. Sure, BU can be an attractive option when stacked against a state school or program like Northeastern, but for all its merit it just can't compete with the prestige carried by an Ivy League school or even BC for that matter. So, yes it is good... but it doesn't even crack the top 10 for New England. Top 20? Maybe.
