Obama stirs racial passions in Harvard case

There are 2194 comments on the www.reuters.com story from Jul 23, 2009, titled Obama stirs racial passions in Harvard case. In it, www.reuters.com reports that:

President Barack Obama plunged his presidency into a charged racial debate and set off a firestorm in one of America's most liberal bastions by siding with a black Harvard scholar who accuses police of racism.

Saying he was unaware of "all the facts" but that police in Cambridge, Massachusetts, "acted stupidly" in their arrest of Henry Louis Gates, Obama whipped up emotions on both sides of an issue that threatens to open old wounds in Massachusetts.

Obama was 1000% right whenever he said this cop was stupid for doing what he did.

I've been out with Black friends of mine, who were pulled over, slammed to the ground, with a gun to the back of their head, and then driven 2 blocks where a woman said, " Nope, that's not them"
and then driven back and dropped off without even an apology.

American police are racist, even black ones, and they are more becoming like nazi gestapo scum. WE live in a police state and that is a fact.
I'm proud of Obama to have the courage to speak out. And no I'm not black!

Did it ever occur to you that "even Black" cops are sick and tired of the free-for-all crime in Black neighborhoods? Cops of all colors are only following the law, limp wrist. Apparently you and your homies were driving around in places where there is an optimal amount of crime. But instead of keeping your a$$e$ our of the area you find it necessary to "drive around" in places you don't belong.

Your Obama is dividing this country, opposite of all the promises he made about unity during his campaign. He had one goal in mind during the election - win at all cost. Say anything to do it. He is purposely pitting us against each other because he himself is a racist.

I got a question for you amazed, if your mother is violently robbed and beaten and later sees the people who did it and says that is them, what do you want to police to do. Ask her if he has a video for proof or go get the bad guys .

Or I guess you expect the police to get shot because they did not treat the person as a serious threat. Your full of it.

The guy only had to say he lived in the house and show his id. But instead he has to make race an issue so it was.

Obama probably should have kept out of this one.
One of the reasons he got some many white votes was because he was seen as above the whole race/racist issue.
.
By throwing himself into the middle of it, and stirring up the pot if you will, he's only causing trouble. Nothing good can come from his comments.
.
And to admit he doesn't have all the facts but still condemn the officer, sounds kinda Bushy if you ask me.

As soon as he identified himself as the damn resident, the stupid pig should've left him alone.

ITs black and white..
Obama was NOT right for opening his mouth on this one. Especially since he didnt know ALL the facts.

The Man was abuse loud and be disorderly.. It shouldnt matter who or what color his skin is.

He was arrest on those charges.

If he hadnt been a dink in the first place NON of it would of happend.

And Obviously he didnt know who the policeman was that he was being rude to. And accusing of being racist.

I agree with the President. You don't need all of the fact to realize that the police reacted stupidly when they arrested this man after establishing that he was the home owner.

Now with that being said, I wish that the President had left it at 'I don't know all the facts yet'; because this diverted attention away from what I thought was a brilliant performance in his progress report on Health Care.

The police officer should not have responded to a burglary call where the description of two black men was givem. Responding was obviously racist. White officers should only respond to burlary calls where no race is given for the suspect.

The officer also went too far when he had the audacity to ask for the ID of the black man in the house. Again, obviously a racist action as he clearly would have just accepted the word of anyone other than a black man that they were the legal resident.

These two racist actions and the color of the officers skin justified the verbal tirade that Gates delivered. This officer clearly deserved to be berated by Gates and called stupid by the Inflamer in Chief because of all the past injusticeses in the world.

Police offiers can read the stats. Black on black crime is rampant. Black on white crime is out of sight. Blacks incarcirated are at a much higher percent than their percent of the population. Black dropout rate from high school is way out of proportion to its percent of the overall population. There are far more single parent homes in the Black community than other races. To ignore the stats can get police officers killed.

Why isn't Obama on TV every night discussing these problems in the Black community ?

I don't know all the facts either, but on the face of it, if police get a call about a home invasion in my home, I prefer them to check it out. Including asking for my id and checking the area to make sure there is no one there I am unaware of.

Police are not only law enforcement, but are also there as protectors. Unless there is more to it, I assume that is why the police officer acted the way he did until I find out otherwise.

Did it ever occur to you that you can drive wherever you want in the good ol USA. You said that the guys should not have been driving in a bad neighborhood even if they lived there. You sir are the problem with this country. You will continue to support a gestapo type police force and when they come for your ass it will be too late.

As long as the babies are born out of wedlock and/or the rate of single parents hover in the 80% range in many areas, we can spend trillions of more dollars on poverty and trillions more afterward. The results will still be the same. The implications of racism or accused racism will go on. Now we are going broke. And people are getting tired of it.

Cops should agressively but politely patrol white areas where they are appreciated.Cops should POLITELY patrol black areas very very slowly with lights and sirens on.They should take a statement if one is offered;OTHERWISE LET THEM EAT EACH OTHER.

We can deal with the statistics regarding disproportionate black crime the same way Liberals want to deal with Firefighter exams for promotions. We must correct for"BIAS". It's all a matter of adding or subtracting brownie points.Presto!! Problem solved.

Wrong. Your exaggerations are baseless. The man identified himself and provided his ID.
The cop was being a stupid inbred prick.
