I don't know whether to feel sorry for them or happy for them. I just guess it will have to be both.

No it wasn't Ho Ho. She has eyes on each side of her head but as far as I can tell, it's only ONE head. EEWWWWW.

Seriously, the parents will love and take care of their child, I'm sure. It will require an adjustment for all involved. Post #3 was right on, thanks 4 the info.

Nature is amazing and strange. Normally, a fetus that is deformed is usually miscarried. Nature tries to correct itself sometimes, but not always. Perhaps it is true then - 2 heads are better then one. The Henzel twins - Abigail and Brittany are an amazing example. I'm sure their parents are very proud of them, and why shouldn't they be. I hope babies born with any kind of deformity have nurturing and supporting family and friends. I wish them love, good health and as much happiness as possible.

I don't consider this "deformed" or a "mistake." Nature knows best. We need to get over our bigotry towards those who are different and stop feeling sorry for them. Different is not inferior, and different people don't need condescension, but either treated as though they are not different, or left alone to be in peace. I share your wishes.

You are right purplegirl. I think because humans generally look the same - that is - one head, 2 arms, 2 legs and 2 eyes - we assume that anyone who does not fit into that category, is not normal. The fact that such babies survive and live to enjoy at least something of a normal life and or happy life; provided that they have support from family and/or friends; implies that nature allows life to carry on, no matter what the obstacles. Life is life and it is very precious and dear. Hope your Mother's Day was a happy one.

I agree. That is a sweet way of putting things. I don't really celebrate holidays. I guess part of that is living alone, and part of that is the bad memories. Yesterday, the intrusive thoughts pushed into my mind hard. Today, they came too.

Speaking of Abby and Brit, their situation was interesting. Most dicephalous twins don't survive for long, but the Hensel case is an exception. They did have to have a couple surgeries over their life. One was an amputation early in life. They actually were born with 3 arms, but the one in the center was a useless stub and in the way. Then as they approached their teen years, they had a life-threatening situation. They had scoliosis and their rib cage was not growing properly. You can see how that could affect their breathing and heart function, so doctors had to go in and rework some of their bones. Coordination is an interesting thing, since like the infant in the article, they have 2 spinal columns. They each have control of half the body, and yet they somehow know how to coordinate between them.

How things work for them legally varies per department. I mean, they both have drivers' licenses. Sex, marriage, and pregnancy will probably all prove to be challenging. I guess they could legally marry two partners, but with one or two, it may seem like bigamy. Pregnancy is iffy, since although they have one normal set of female parts (2 ovaries, 2 tubes, 1 uterus, 1 cervix, etc.), they have 2 pituitary glands, and 2 hypothalamuses. But since growth turned out fine, and all the other hormones are presumably balanced, I see no reason why reproduction wouldn't work. I don't think their birth condition is in the germ line (DNA), so the possibility of them ending up with the same is probably very low.
