President E. Gordon Gee wants Ohio State to become the world's university by expanding its teaching, research and physical presence overseas, starting with offices in China, India and Brazil.

Translation; Ohio State wants to make it more easier to bring in foreign guest workers on various visas. This coming in a state with real unemployment is well over 15%, has budget troubles and a university where students are having a difficult time paying tuition to go to school. Where is Ohio State going to get the money to open these "gateways"?

I’m all for having our students study overseas for a semester or two and we should reciprocate with any university that takes in our students. That said we don’t need to be opening any branches overseas. I seriously doubt I could even get into Ohio State today with the higher entrance requirements. I consider that when I get mailings asking me to donate. I understand the desire to be the envy of your colleagues, but President Gee, I must politely remind you that Ohio State is a land grant university founded to educate Ohioans. It is not an elite Ivy League school. I don’t understand how the university was allowed to go off in this direction. Where is our state legislature in this matter? Ohio State needs to be the place where an average kid from all corners of Ohio can come to have the experience of a lifetime and then go out in the world and DO SOMETHING GREAT. The elite students are already on track to do something great. We need places like Ohio State for the average to become above average.

Makes sense since that's where all the jobs are headed. What does "OSU" really stand for: Overseas University or Outsourced University?

The Columbus area hasn't exactly suffered with the foreign professionals in the area. OSU, Honda, Battelle are better for it don't you think? I don't think OSU is trying to make it easier for Chipotle to get more restaurant help.

1) International students pay much higher tuition than Ohioans - they will be paying for *our* educations, not vice-versa
2) International students spend money in the US - they buy cars, rent apartments, eat food, buy clothing, often take US airlines, travel, etc.
3) Part of educating Ohioans to become global leaders is creating an international environment for them right here in Ohio. Increasing international enrollments enriches the learning experience for *everyone* at Ohio State.
4) Is it really a bad investment to increase the number of people in the world that care about Ohio? If you want to sell more Ohio products overseas, doesn't it help for people overseas to have heard of Ohio?

The gateways and the opportunities they create will help Ohioans Do Something Great in an *already* global world.

Regular students from Ohio can and do get their education from OSU. The only basic requirement is that they are willing to work hard to do so. While OSU's requirements have stiffened, admission is far more open than at an "elite" school. With just a little bit of knowledge, this reader could easily understand that foreign countries are "outsourcing" their education to Ohio. Education is one "industry" that actually attracts "business" to Ohio and contributes to creating jobs there. Education, business, and government leaders really need to put some effort toward informing Ohioans about what it is going to take to succeed in an "already globalized" world.

To Ohio State alum: OSU is allowed to go in this direction because the state of Ohio desperately needs to catch up with the rest of the country economically. Anything that connects Ohio more directly and strongly with the global economy is a huge plus. Kudos to Pres. Gee for recognizing this need and putting resources behind meeting it.

How do you propose to have a prosperous economy if you close your borders? Is it smart to have people making $65/hour making cheap clothing or toys? Did you ever think that maybe we gain more from a global economy than we lose?

Perhaps the only group of people in Ohio that might be able to say they do not live in a global community are Amish who make by themselves everything that they use.

Many of them do speak a "foreign" language, though...
