An employee at a factory that makes iPhones in China killed himself after a prototype went missing.

Apple is doing NOTHING DIFFERENTLY than any other manufacturer of most products. If you go into most corporations today, here in the States even, you go thru many layers of security with each move, even down to walking from someones office to the ladies room. Security is of the utmost importance since there are legions of 'vultures' from other companies just waiting to steal your pre production ideas and products as well as some who want to be 'the first' to let out all of your companies secrets and have their name in print to be the one as having done it.

I can understand that security is a concern, but how many people get beaten up by company security guards, and end up dead over these things in the states?

I DON'T KNOW the full crcumstances of this case, and many have offered explanations that are plausible.

He may have killed himself over shame, a sense of honour, losing his job etc etc.

Fine. I didn't say otherwise.

But, the fact that so many of you want to perceive an observation (that this isn't typical of occurences elsewhere in response to FAL's comment)- which is ALL that I actually said - as an attack on China itself says a lot more about yourselves than it does me.

This kind of irrational defensiveness in perceiving criticism out of proportion to what is actually said is self defeating, and will just serve to polarise opinion instead of encouraging engagement and discussion.

By the by - the story that he was beaten up by company security guards didn't originate with me. It's in the original article, which also says that the head of security is suspended and has been referred to police.

For a start, any Chinese Long March & war veterans can tell you, they get first class medical treatment when they are sick and overall they get better treatments & respects in China when compared to the US Vietnam or Iraqi war veterans.

Country like China has already passed the stage where they welcome this type of manufacturing or process trade. They get very little profit and are in fact paid only for their labor. The MNC get the main profit.

Something manufactured & exported out of China for US20, China gets USD2 for its labor charges after deducting the cost of imported materials, machineries, transportation, administration, etc . MNC in term sold the finished products to international consumers at USD150~200, who do you think benefits most.

By your suggestion, US companies will go under left alone offer you a job.

Now they are slowly going to other lower cost countries e.g. Vietnam, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc. why not return to the USA.

They will just go to another third world country where the labour cost is still cheaper than USA.
