As others have said, a cig thrown into a bucket of gas will go out, nothing more.

Let that man rot in jail a while so he can think of the lives he could have taken with his stupid act!

My mom always told us the an idol mind is the devil's workshop. Either way you're right. It's a cry for attention and help. Hope he gets it. Needs medical care for sure.
My mom told me a similar thing except she said "idle hands are the Devil's workshop", which is the actual expression. "Idol minds" are the thoughts of things held in high regard. "Idle hands" are symbolic for people with nothing constructive to do.

I didn't read that he was injured either and needed medical attention. I do suppose he would need psychological or emotional assistance.

It does take a spark to cause a gasoline explosion.

It takes an open flame to ignite gasoline unless it is under compression.

Hmmm -- there COULD'VE been an explosion. Gasoline burns quickly, but it doesn't explode unless it's in a confined space. A bucket is not a confined space, so the gas would just burn (if you use an open flame to light it -- a cig might just go out). However, a gas tank IS a confined space, so the fumes could've ignited (the fumes are more combustible than the liquid) and traveled down into the gas tank where the gas and fumes create pressure and could cause an explosion.

My only question is do fumes ignite?
Yes. Actually, they are more flammable than the liquid. That's why there's supposed to be NO SMOKING and NO CELL PHONE USE at gas stations.
