The Enduring Mystery Of Beverly Jarosz

Jan 18, 2008 Full story: Free Times 1,031

“Monday, December 28, Bev and I got up about 8:30, 9 o'clock. We had breakfast and then washed dishes from the night before.”

Looking back, it seemed that Beverly Jarosz had sensed that Death wanted her. A vague sense of impending danger first stirred in the summer of 1964, around the time the 16 year old received an anonymous present ... via Free Times

Hey Dawn, sorry to hear of your health issues. All the best to you. You aren't alone in this Beverly Jarosz obsession. I just don't see how it can be anyone other than the guy who lived two doors down. I just don't see a man (who would by the way be covered in blood as the struggle was horrendous) running down the drive and into the road. This had to be the man out the back door and into another house safely within seconds. Apparently, Carol(the sister) said that Beverly had put a big sharp letter opener on the stand in the upstairs for protection "just in case". Apparently this is what the killer used as the letter opener vanished and has never been recovered. He probably came in to strangle her, and she fought fiercely for her life and then he went for the letter opener. There was blood everywhere and he certainly could not have gotten in a car and drove away. The reference to Barb Klonowski's brother...I re-read that article and it was her COUSIN Stanley that Beverly referred to as having problems. Maybe the killer is reading all of these things. I hope he is. I'd like to see him ripped from limb to limb. He's managed to beat this rap though but someone out there knows what happened. And I think the P.D. and all the local media and the G.H. Police need to keep this up and keep the pressure on. I don't know if P.D. ran anything about the 40th anniversary. I check cleveland.com everyday to see. The last I knew the two Garfield Hts. detectives were reopening the case and reinterviewing everyone. That article is on the internet and then also the interview recently with Carol and Mrs. Jarosz the mother. So sad, I just weep for them. No closure. They just want to know what happened and aren't that much into the justice aspect. I say we keep the heat on and the pressure to solve the case.

BAM. Terrific post. Incredible sleuthing. When you said you were going to ask around, your weren’t kidding. I think you hit the nail on the head. 80M each and trust funds for the kids to boot you say. I wondered about The Bank of Cleveland. I found out that banks, and savings and loan associations, were the most prominent and important business enterprises in the history of Cleveland's Polish communities. The Bank of Cleveland was the city's first Polish bank. It was started around 1913 in the Warszawa area, by Stanley Klonowski (Barbs g g grandfather I think.) Stanley had aligned himself with Michael Kniola, a very highly respected businessman with many of the residents of Warszawa, and whose familiarity with personalities in the city's banking and exchange circles, made him a respected leader in the Polish community until his death in the 1940's. So yes, I would say the Klonowski’s influence, monetary and political, in the community was very deep and very significant. You know, Beverly’s grandmothers’ last name was Vanek. I wonder if her family was related to Charles A.Vanik,(different spelling though,) the late Ohio Senator and U.S. Representative? And from “Oakpark neighbor,” Paul was the prime suspect of the Cleveland Detectives. In an earlier post, Henry Oleksiak, told of a boy running down E112 in his shorts. I thought he was kidding me in response to my post. When I ask for clarification, he didn’t respond. Have you every heard that story before? If true, maybe that boy was Paul? Or maybe “Henry” was referring to Krawczyk’s made-up story? It might be a stretch, literally, to see the backdoor from the side-door. I have seen the side-door, but not the backdoor. If Barb saw her brother coming out that backdoor, or someone else for that matter, I’m surprised the family didn’t ship her off to Europe for her own good also. Imagine living with that knowledge. I had read that Barb had a rough time because of the accusations directed against her. This puzzles me, according to a 10-26-08 PD Staff article, Grandma Vanek told police she was on the phone with Beverly at 1:15pm when Beverly said she had to hangup to open the door for her friend. Who was at the side-door, Paul, Barb, or both? And this friend Gary Grayson allegedly saw Barb walking home from Beverly’s and drove her the rest of the way home. I wonder what Grayson had to say about that? I found a police report from 1996 filed against a Paul L. Klonowski for possession of fireworks. It showed he was living on Oakpark, so I guess he’s around. I believe he has since moved from Oakpark.

if you click on to the first web site after typing in beverly jarosz, there is a free times site, with a story.if you scroll down it shows a picture of the back of the house, i was thinking if she was at the side door, and heard the back door open or close, she might of thought it was bev.and started to the back yard and saw someone running through the back yard.

Yep, that works. I wonder why Renner and Bellamy, et. all, never tried to interview Barb and Paul? If the authors’ tried and failed, why not at least mention that fact in their books. Maybe fear of a lawsuit? I’m sure Barb, Paul, and the rest of the Klonowski’s have the best representation their millions can buy. There is probably no way anyone could make them, legally, give-up their DNA or fingerprints. And their publicly available records, whatever they are, have probably all been sealed. Maybe Barb was in the wrong place at the wrong time? Was Paul aware of his sister’s date with Beverly and decide to use his sister’s visit as a way to justify to Beverly his presence at the house that day? Imagine Barb’s shock, if she saw Paul coming out that backdoor? If it was Paul, he couldn’t have run all the way to Oakpark, so how did he escape the area? Did he park on E 112 and drive away? Still would like to hear Gary Grayson’s account of picking up Barb and driving her home. Was she just wondering around? I’ll bet theirs a few Psychiatrists out there with the whole story.

Wow this is getting good. I often wondered how and why would Barb be going through the Jarosz' mailbox thumbing through a magazine. If I remember correctly growing up in Cleveland neighbors become quite perturbed if you even walked across a blade of their grass let alone be looking at their mail!!! Could she have been a lookout for whoever was in the house?? Maybe Paul went with her to the house to make out with Beverly and things went a little too far and too fast. What was happening that Beverly started to have a letter opener for her protection? In the book Cleveland Cemeteries, a person listed as being buried in Calvary Cemetery was Stanley Klonowski. He was described as a Polish born businessman and banker. In 1931 he wrote to President Hoover proposing a way to handle the Depression era bank crisis. Hoover took his advice and initiated a plan providing 500 million in credit for banks. Connections to President Hoover back then??? This family was very well-connected. I'm with you folks, I would have been knocking down the door and maybe calling the police right away saying "I was supposed to meet my friend, she's not answering the door and now I hear strange sounds coming from the house where the door is unlocked and the radio is way too loud" Wouldn't Beverly have confided her fears to Barb about a secret admirer? Sounds too strange.

The detective that investigated the case for so many years Det. Horrigan passed away a number of yrs.ago. He had stated that he knew who the killer was within the first days of the investigation. He would not give the name of the person he suspected. He told the reporter that he would not give him the name as he (the reporter) would not be able to use it anyway. Maybe it was an individual with family connections. What if Beverly's body were to be exumed? Could there still be DnA available after all these years.?
The story as I knew it to be is that the SIDE door was open but the screen door was closed but the inner door to the kitchen was open. Barb rings the doorbell, hears the loud music, hears the thud (which was Beverly fighting for her life) etc. Later Bev's father rushes home finds the side storm doorUNLOCKED the inner door still open....and that the back door was completely open.
My question,.,who was it that the detective Horrigan who died think it was - why wouldn't he say? Are there any of his relatives that would say who he thought it was. How come in that last articler written in Free Times..."The Enduring Mystery of Beverly Jarosz" there is not one sentence devoted to the suspect of Klonowski in any way. Wouldn't this have been included in this article that mentioned all the other possibl suspects,McNamara, Paliyan, etc. No connection with Klonowski is mentioned. We need more info about the Klonowski family to be brought forth into the public limelight. When you narrow it all down there's really not that many people who could have done this it just has to be within her circle. Now, someone knows something! Someone knows more than they are saying and is avoiding any press.

You know what might be good---LET'S GET INDEPENDENT DETECTIVES to investigate the case. Independent people out of the Cleveland area - maybe FBI? I don't know what I'm thinking but if the same Garfield Hts.-Cleveland people keep investigating maybe they are stopped by something that an outsider may blow through. Who could we get to have outside interest. You know I don't think the case was ever on John Walsh or any of the Cold Case files? Fresh eyes and minds with no prejudices one way or the other. I often wondered why this murder was not national news. I often thought of contacting John Walsh, etc. Any thoughts/ideas? I don't think it will ever be solved by the Garfield-Cleveland detectives. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG. I smell a rat.

I smell something bigger than a rat!! MONEY and lots of it being spread around to keep things quiet. John Walsh could do a good episode of America's Most Wanted and maybe one of those investigative report shows. Cold Case files, anything would help. We need to find out who did this!!!! If it gets out into the public eye again it could trigger some memory in someone to come forward. How long was Barbara supposed to be outside the house and nobody saw anything?? I'm not buying it. Not for a minute. Those houses are tight together. Someone heard or saw something. And I don't think it was a stranger because they would stick out like a sore thumb. i remember hearing a story years ago about the neighbor next door who was taking a nap but thought they heard the screen door slam at Beverly's house and stated "If I had gotten up I could have seen who was leaving the house" Were the Klonowski's well known in the neighborhood or did they keep a low profile? This keeps getting more interesting as time goes on.

Amazing how much has been posted since September. The Klonowskis were very influential in the community.(To clarify a few things...National City Bank purchased the Bank of Cleveland... the Bank of Cleveland did not "become" National City Bank. National City had been around much longer than the Bank of Cleveland. I mention this because I went to work at National City the summer after I graduated from high school..before I left for college in the Fall.)
I don't know exactly how "soon" after Beverly's murder, Paul "went to Europe" to study...but it was quite soon...like within a month.

The article by John P. Coyne in the Cleveland Plain Dealer dated December 26, 2004 was titled "POLICE ARMED WITH NEW TOOLS, REOPEN '64 CASE"
The article tells that two detectives Robert Sackett ande Carl Biegacki will be reinvestigating the case...that was 2004. The article goes over all the known details. So 4 more yrs have gone by and nothing. These two detectives grew up in the area and one of them is friends with Mr. Jarosz. SO what's going on??? Are they still on the case? Maybe we can send them letters/e-mails, etc. I would love to see the FBI get involved or at least the State authorities - some fresh eyes with no ties. How does that happen? Anyone have any suggestions? I'm beginning to think the community from around THORNTON AVE.know so much more...??

That seems to be the general consensus. Somebody knows something that could break this case wide open. If only they would come forward . In an article I read awhile ago, it said that Beverly's mom was the rare exception at the time who worked outside the home. So this means that most of the other mothers were at home. Someone knows what went on.

I would like to invite all who are interested in solving Beverly's murder to join Websleuths, an online crime forum and share your opinions with fellow members, some of whom are experts in crime solving. There is already a thread on her that is begging for discussion. It can be found under "Cold Cases".

I thought about posting on Websleuth’s Website, but they don’t accept public email addresses. Your right though, Websleuth’s would probably have broader appeal. Conversely, I do believe all the answers to all the questions concerning Beverly’s murder can be discovered locally. I would not be surprised if the murderer or someone with intimate knowledge of the murder has read our posts. In an anonymous forum as this, I would think this is a perfect outlet for those with unexpressed details, thoughts, opinions, and questions about the murder, to express them and get things “off their chest.” I know in the last 2 months, my knowledge of the murder increased greatly from this forum. I kind of feel we hit the wall now. However, I will keep checking this forum for new posts and if I have any new information or questions I will certainly post them here. I just hope this forum stays open.
