Ohio.com - Four cases 20 years cold

Full story: Akron Beacon Journal

The murder of a female jogger 20 years ago this month marked the beginning of a string of similar slayings that had Akron and surrounding communities on edge for months, fearing a serial killer was at work.

Good luck, my cousin was murdered in 1991 in Akron, her decomposed body was found in a park, never found her murderer either...
However, my OTHER cousin was also murdered in Akron in 1996 and her murderer was found 6 or 7 yrs later, thanks to newer DNA technology. Glad the S.O.B. that raped, beat strangled and suffocated my 12 yr old cousin will be behind bars for a very long time!

Lets not forget the Hoods who were also slashed with a knife. Also the bar owner in Barberton and the guy they found along Summit road and the highway. I believe all were stabbed also around the same time.

20 years for **** Mayor Don P to have his police department solve 4 murders, and they still haven't been solved it. I guess a serial murderer in Akron is not important to Donny Boy. He's only interested in lining the pockets of his supporters with taxpayer dollars, keeping the police and fire under staffed, and using eminent domain to remove people from their homes for economic development.

Just another good reason to vote for Joe Finley for Mayor of Akron Sept 11th.

I feel for all the families who have not received justice. Someone has to know something, and hopefully someone will step forth and give some information.

Police should spend less time on unlawful searches and more time on cases like these.

Don't blame people such as police, mayors, etc... Use your brain and think back to the era where these murders happened. There were a lot of plant closures around that time. Rubber industries shutting down, auto workers being bounced all over the country... What if there was a worker that just "went off his nut" and filled his or her time killing these poor innocent victims. Maybe a search of where these workers were transferred to will reveal like murders in that area. What would the profile show of this kind of an animal? God bless the families and the victims.
This is information that has already been thought of but what if it hadn't been and you or I were the tool to get this maniac put behind bars?! Please, use your minds and do not play the blame game. Throw your ideas out there and maybe you will have an idea that law enforcement has not had to date. I challenge you all... What are your ideas? Good luck and let us help the police instead of bad wrapping them.

Reaching out...The Bike Trail...If I remember correctly, She was found near RT 303 on the bike trail.

As for Barbara Blatnik, I think she was another victim of Glenn Benner's, because of the way she was killed and the fact that she was at Blossom Music Center, where he killed another girl.

I'd look into the same people that killed Sandy Jo Hogue, and the clerk from a stow Lawson's about the same time, and the young north high couple found in their car...Mary?

President Reagen did not rape and murder these women, President Bush did.

How well I remember these murders. I have often wondered what happened with these cases. How easily we forget yet how easily (and sadly) we are reminded that they are still unsolved.
I think all these cold cases should be spotlighted on A&E's "Cold Case Files" show. They did a show on Hannah Hill (though they really KNOW who killed her).
And wasn't the clerk from the Stow Lawson's killed by Thomas Gilbert? He should have fried by now (if not, too bad).
Sandy Jo Hogue... that's another one.
There was a show done about Mary Leonard and Ricky Beard, may they rest in peace. I hope we'll one day have justice for them too.

I agree. Put this on a national level and maybe something will come to light. May justice be served someday. RIP

Thomas Gilbert is serving life with a possible parole date of 2012 for the murder of Sandy Jo Hogue. He pled down to the murder of Joan Shaffer, age 13 around the same time. I'm not convinced he is guilty of the latter two. I have always thought he confessed, to lighten his sentence.
Ohio, at the time of their murders, did not have the death penalty.
1981, that is.

I feel like one of WNIR's Talk Radio listeners said something that stopped this man from further terror.
I can't prove this but I witnessed a divorced man now dead whom told us in the Cuyahoga Falls health spa tell everyone in the cedar wooded suana that he bought his ex-wife jogging clothes (shoes, too!!) by holding out the articles and saying "Here you go!!!"
This woman later died from her son commiting suicide and she wouldn't get out of bed to stop him thus she had the only open coffin because of his"Hamlet" guilt.
In Shakesphere suicides get no Funeral but in this case his coffin wasn't open.
The joke I heard may have been funny quote/unquote but those four are in my mind serial and it was strange that after giving this guy hell on the radio I heard former Summit County Recorder Ralph James (also dead) blab at my passing ......"Blabber Mouth !!!!"
*Editors note:This case was on my mind earlier today ,you know "I told my wife ...., Here You Go !!"
From what I've read today the case will (Twenty years ?) remain COLD .

Sandy Jo, I believe, was the store clerk but, it was in the Akron area.
She was the reason why they began to require two clerks in the evening hours.

Joan, was the 13 year old victim from Stow.

Thomas Gilbert was convicted of their murders in 1981.
