So if carnitine produces TMAO and in turn causes atherosclerosis, why don't other carnivores like my dogs die of heart disease?

The whole story really depends on what bacteria you have colonized in your gut. Not everyone makes excess levels of TMAO from eating or drinking foods with carnitine.

I think you are right, it depends on the gut micro flora. Part of the study shows that vegans, totally different micro flora, did have a rise in TMAO, the culprit.. It's about the gut flora! Let's study that, then scare the public.

Elsewhere I read that TMAO is already present in marine fish etc. Is TMAO bad ? If so then it makes marine fish bad, doesn't it ? That would be irrespective of gut flora ? More study needed, it seems.

From the linked report: "Chronic dietary pattern has a real profound effect on the intestinal flora composition and your ability to make TMAO," Hazen said. Vegans and vegetarians seem to lack the microbes necessary to break down the carnitine, which may help explain the heart-protective benefit of such a diet.

I would like to know if vegans and vegetarians will continue to enjoy "better" intestinal flora even if they consume L-carnitine in the form of energy drinks (as opposed to red meat). Very interesting, but a lot more study is needed.
