State buying rights to land on Konnowac Pass

There are 1 comment on the Yakima Herald-Republic story from Apr 15, 2008, titled State buying rights to land on Konnowac Pass. In it, Yakima Herald-Republic reports that:

“Over the last 100 years, we have converted a lot of their historic habitat to agriculture, highways and houses. The remaining habitat has been degraded in quality and the sage grouse”

Washington state will spend more than $1.1 million to buy development rights on land near the proposed high-end Vineyards Resort near Konnowac Pass in the Rattlesnake Hills, southeast of Yakima. via Yakima Herald-Republic

I have lived in the Yakima valley most of my life-72 year. We often travelled this road. I can't remember when it began to be called Konnowac Pass. I know it is an Indian name, how did this road come to be know by this name and when was the name given. Was it named for an important Indian in the area? Let me know
